JOB OVERVIEW:

We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced T1 Tax Preparer to join our accounting firm. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and reviewing T1 Personal Income Tax Returns while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and excellent client service. This role requires knowledge of Canadian tax laws, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

Education & Certification:

  • Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, or Taxation (preferred but not mandatory).
  • Certified Tax Preparer (CTP) designation is an asset.
  • Completion of a recognized tax preparation course (e.g., H&R Block, CPA Canada).

Experience:

  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience preparing T1 tax returns.
  • Prior experience in an accounting firm or tax preparation company is preferred.

Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in tax preparation software CCH iFirm (ProFile, TaxCycle, Cantax).
  • Familiarity with CRA’s online services (Represent a Client, and Auto-fill My Return).
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian tax laws, deductions, and credits.

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Effective communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism.

Responsibilities:

  1. Tax Preparation & Filing
  • Prepare T1 Personal Income Tax Returns for individuals, self-employed clients, and small business owners.
  • Identify and apply eligible tax deductions, credits, and exemptions to maximize client refunds or minimize tax liabilities.
  • Review and organize client tax documents (T4s, T5s, RRSP contributions, investment income, etc.).
  • Ensure compliance with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) guidelines.
  1. Client Communication & Support
  • Respond to client inquiries regarding tax filings, potential refunds, and outstanding balances.
  • Explain tax laws and regulations in simple, understandable terms to clients.
  • Guide clients on deductions and tax planning strategies for future years.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality and security of client data.
  1. CRA Correspondence & Follow-Ups
  • Assist clients in responding to CRA inquiries, notices, and audits.
  • Submit adjustments, amendments, and re-assessments as required.
  • Track client tax refunds, payments, and outstanding balances.
  • Maintain accurate records of all tax filings and correspondence.
  1. Team Collaboration & Continuous Learning
  • Foster a positive work environment by communicating openly, supporting team members and contributing to a culture of cooperation.
  • Work closely with senior accountants and tax managers on complex cases.
  • Participate in training sessions and professional development opportunities.
