Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Research Pharmacy Tech I will be responsible for assisting the Research Pharmacist to prepare and dispense investigational drugs and materials issued by the Sponsors for ongoing research studies. The position will also be responsible for the coordination, organization, and efficient implementation of clinical data as it relates to the conduct of sites Investigational Drug Service.
This position will maintain accurate, confidential files and documentation of study participants. In executing these position responsibilities, the Research Pharmacy Technician is guided by Good Clinical Practices (GCP), International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and institutional standard operating procedures and policies.

ACCOMPANYING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Thorough knowledge of clinical research concepts, practices, and FDA regulations and ICH Guidelines regarding drug development phases, clinical research, and data management methods.
  • Ability to maintain a neat and clean work area.
  • Ability to develop a well-organized work routine.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to multi-task.
    Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Pharmacy Technician certification that is registered with Texas State Board of Pharmacy and in good standing.
  • ACPE Certification in Sterile Compounding.
  • Two (2) years of pharmacy experience.
  • Two (2) years of sterile compounding experience.
  • Must obtain CITI training within first three (3) months of employment.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

  • Two (2) years of oncology or chemotherapy compounding experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs a variety of clinical functions in support of the Research Pharmacist/staff (e.g., patient interviews, medication safety and adherence initiatives, patient follow-up calls, and collection of clinical data for the research pharmacist).
  • Prepares special formulations of investigational agents under unusual circumstances as dictated by a particular protocol.
  • Follows step-by-step procedures and/or kits for preparation, dispensing and distribution of investigational and study drug.
  • Establishes and maintains adequate and easily retrievable recordkeeping systems for protocols, study subjects, drug inventory and dispensing investigational drugs per regulatory requirements and ICH guidance requirements for handling investigational products.
  • Maintains, completes, and uses drug data sheets, labels, and other predefined formats for research pharmacy computer entry.
  • Maintains standards which assure quality, proper storage and safe use of all investigational agents and related supplies.
  • Performs the removal and disposal of expired investigational products and supplies from completed or terminated studies according to protocol guidelines.
  • Performs ordering and stocking of investigational and study agents and supplies.
  • Handles investigational and study drugs according to the requirements of the sponsoring agencies.
  • Assists with appropriate monthly pharmacy audits to ensure that institutional policies and procedures are met.
  • Assists in quality assurance procedures, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
