PhD position
There is a vacancy for a PhD Research Fellow in applied and computational mathematics at the Department of Mathematics. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with compulsory other work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department). The position is subject to financing from the University of Bergen and Equinor Akademia VI agreement. The PhD Research Fellow will be part of the Porous Media Research Group and the Center for Modeling of Coupled Subsurface Dynamics at the University of Bergen.
About the project/work tasks:
The significant presence of minerals, e.g., lithium (Li), in deep geothermal brines, combined with increasing demands of rare minerals, opens for co-production of geothermal energy and minerals. The PhD Research Fellow will in collaboration with the project team develop mathematical models and numerical approaches for compositional reactive transport required to assess the potential of geothermal energy and mineral co-production from deep hydrothermal systems. This includes the modelling of case-studies for co-production of specific minerals. Software development in the project will expand on the open-source software framework PorePy (github.com/pmgbergen/porepy), which already has strong capabilities in modelling of compositional multiphase flow. The project also involves interdisciplinary collaborations with experimental researchers in aqueous geochemistry who will do lab experiments that will provide data for the modelling.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent education in applied and computational mathematics or scientific computing, or, alternatively, in computational physics or computational geoscience. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 31 December 2024. It is a condition of employment that the master’s degree has been awarded
  • Education at master’s level and strong expertise in mathematical modelling, partial differential equations, numerical analysis, and related software development is a requirement
  • Good programming skills are required
  • Coursework in introductory chemistry and experience with numerical methods for flow in porous media and/or reactive transport is an advantage, but most emphasis will be placed on background in applied and computational mathematics
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner and demonstrate good collaborative skills
  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system. The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.
About the PhD Research Fellow position:
The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility for a 4th year, consisting of 25 % compulsory work (e.g. teaching responsibilities at the department) distributed over the employment period. The 4th year is contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department and will be decided by the head of department upon appointment.
The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).
