Position Title: Phlebotomist / Laboratory Technician

Compensation: $25.00 – $30.81/hr DOE
Grant: N/A
Hours: Full time, Monday-Friday, 8:00AM-4:30PM. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends may be required based on need.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: Must have successfully completed an approved phlebotomy training program. Must also possess a High School diploma or GED certificate. Experience with Pediatric patients preferred. Education, training or experience which compliments knowledge and skills stated above is desirable, but does not substitute for minimum requirements as stated. Must be at least 18 years of age.
Licenses/Certifications: A valid California driver’s license required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
Applicant must be insurable under SIHC vehicle insurance policy at the time of hire and throughout employment.
A current California State Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II, or Certified Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Certificate is required.

Physical and Personal Requirements: Normal clinic/office environment. Sit or stand for long periods of time. Reach, bend, climb, stoop, lift up to 25 lbs. repetitive hand movement; use and view PC. Reliable transportation and car insurance as required by the state. Travel as needed.
Compliance: Each employee plays a key role in creating a compliance culture at SIHC. Employees are expected to learn and comply with all SIHC policies and procedures. One must have the ability to understand the implications and complexities of all compliance policies. Participation in all compliance training is mandatory, and generally have a heightened awareness of policies and regulations that are specific to one’s department and position. All SIHC employees are expected to report violations or suspected violations of compliance policies or regulations.
Other: Applicants must successfully pass a pre-screening tuberculin skin test or x-ray and a blood/urine drug screening test. Health must be adequate to perform all duties of the position. Applicant must complete SIHC Application and Authorization Form, both must be submitted to Human Resources prior to the close date indicated.

Responsibilities:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Nursing, draws blood, collects other lab specimens and processes specimens for test. Performs in-house laboratory tests. Maintains professional knowledge. Substitutes at Campo Medical clinic on an as needed basis.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares patient appropriately for venipuncture.
  • Instructs patients on collection of other specimens including urine, stool, and other body fluids
  • Performs phlebotomy including, but not limited to:
  • Selection of blood collection equipment appropriate to test requisition
  • Preparation of a patient and infection control
  • Venipunctures from patients of varying ages, health, and obesity status
  • Post-puncture care of patients
  • Processing of blood containers after collection, including centrifugation
  • Ensure proper labeling and handling of specimens to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Documentation of inhouse test results
  • Report inhouse lab results to the medical provider
  • Conduct quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results.
  • Prepare and deliver reports to physicians and other healthcare providers.
  • Collaborates with providers and outside vendors to ensure updates in lab testing are communicated to the healthcare team.
  • Monitors inventory and manages laboratory supplies.
  • Maintains laboratory environment and documentation for accreditation.
  • Monitors critical laboratory reporting process.
  • Monitors and controls all lab orders for results received.
  • Maintains and operates all laboratory equipment.
  • Perform and monitors quality controls with all laboratory equipment.
  • Follow CLIA., HIPAA, OSHA, and safety guidelines.
  • Maintain proper laboratory infection control to prevent exposure across all elements of laboratory services.
  • Attends staff meetings, participates in Clinic continuing education programs and attends training and professional conferences as requested.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities.
  • Provide excellent customer service and care to patients.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule may be required based on need.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
