Position summary
The Department of Medicine and the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute is looking for two skilled Physician Assistants to work with us to provide the best possible care for our patients.
The successful applicant would join a group of 47 cardiologists, and 3-4 hospitalists, at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI). UOHI is a large tertiary centre providing cardiovascular care to Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The UOHI is Canada’s largest and foremost heart health centre. It employs over 1,400 physicians, nurses, researchers, technicians, allied health professionals and more. The Institute handles more than 235,000 patients yearly from across Canada.
In addition to state-of-the-art catheterization (4) and electrophysiology (4) labs, a dedicated cardiac imaging facility with PET, MRI, CT, SPECT and echocardiography imaging, core facilities include 96 inpatient ward beds, an intensive cardiac care unit (ICCU) with 14 beds, an intensive cardiac surgery unit (CSICU) with 27 beds, a Day Unit with 36 beds, a Reference Centre with 11 beds and a Structural Procedure Unit of 6 beds.
The Division is renowned for delivery of outstanding cardiac care, excellence in education at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels (recognized as a leading training program in Canada and internationally) and recognized internationally for its research, in particular in electrophysiology, cardiac imaging, STEMI/ACS coronary intervention, valvular disease, cardiac transplantation and pulmonary hypertension programs, among others, as well as its strength in heart failure and structural interventions.
For our physician assistants, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute offers opportunities for expanding clinical skills and continuing professional development in a supportive clinical environment.
Responsibilities
Successful candidates will work 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the UOHI inpatient wards (not in the ICCU). There is no on-call and no expectation of weekend or evening coverage. Physician Assistants at UOHI will round on patients daily along with the attending cardiologist (who is the MRP), +/- a hospitalist and provide orders and advice to nursing staff regarding the ongoing care of these patients. They will provide direct care to patients with internal medicine conditions and manage and coordinate along with the MRP care plans for patients.
Qualifications
Completion of an accredited PA program or equivalent; Certified or eligible to be certified through the CAPA (Canadian Association of Physician Assistants) or Certified through NCCPA (National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants) for American educated/trained PAs.
Candidates must have very good interpersonal and clinical skills and be committed to patient-centered care. The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.
Additional information
The Ottawa Hospital is a 1,150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) is TOH’s research arm.
