QUALIFICATIONS

• Degree in Physics (or related discipline) with demonstrated experience in Computer Science/Computer Engineering, a Masters is preferred;
• One to three years’ related experience is required;
• Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Occupational First Aid /CPR and Laboratory Safety, or willingness to be trained;
• Computer skills: able to use MATLAB, office products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access) to produce material for lab, to track student lab marks, to track departmental equipment,
• Knowledge of D2L or willingness to be trained;
• Superior attention to detail;
• University level numerical/mathematical skills;
• Excellent time-management and organizational skills, proactive;
• Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Creative, logical, and critical thinker;
• Ability to work unsupervised and as part of a team;
• Interpersonal and communication skills to deal with students, Training Assistants, Professors, etc.;
• Ability to engage productively with co-workers, researchers, students, and faculty;
• Ability to learn and develop new techniques, both through assisted training and self-training; and
• Ability to work fluently (verbal and written) in both official languages, French and English, is required.

This technologist will report to both the Director of the School of Natural Sciences and the Director of the School of Engineering and Computer Science. The incumbent is responsible to run the Physics courses laboratory sections, and is responsible for the management of the computer systems and equipment in the School of Engineering and Computer Science. The incumbent collaborates with faculty, staff, students and others within the two Schools, and liaises with other units as required. The technologist works under the supervision of the Dean of the Faculty.

• In collaboration with the professor responsible for the course, create and review lab experiments for the first-year Physics course labs;
• Provide the Physics lab instruction complementing the students’ classroom education by developing the practical aspects of the students’ theoretical work in the lab;
• Supervise TAs during lab sessions;
• Operate and maintain the lab teaching equipment;
• Assist in the operation and maintenance of the research and teaching equipment;
• Deliver information sessions for the first 4 weeks. During these sessions, theory required to complete the labs, safety procedures as well as experimental procedures are taught to the students by the technologist;
• Explain lab expectations and guide students on how to format the lab reports;
• Inspect and comment on experimental data collected during experiments;
• Set-up experiments ahead of each lab session;
• Participate in the repair and maintenance of teaching lab equipment;
• Communicate health and safety rules and regulations to students enrolled in Physics labs;
• Alongside the professor in charge, prepare and periodically revise the Physics lab manual;
• Be responsible for duties such as delivery of packages, assisting other technologists in the Schools, etc.;
• Attend training sessions on D2L, Occupational Health & Safety, etc. provided by Laurentian University;
• Keep up with recent developments in Physics and fields relevant to the position;
• Contact vendors for information on equipment and/or supplies for teaching and/or research;
• Purchase Physics equipment and supplies following the LU purchasing policy;
• Install, update, operate, configure, maintain and improve the IT equipment in the Computer Science labs as needed;
• Assist in lab teaching and demonstrations and provide training to students, staff and faculty;
• Consult and collaborate with IT department to manage the network and DNS;
• Consult and collaborate with the IT department to monitor the safety and security of the systems, monitor for any security breaches and malicious activity, and educate the students and faculty to keep their systems safe;
• Support the faculty in installing, running, and maintenance of software on lab computers;
• Support faculty and students in software installation, maintenance and configuration of lab and personal computers/laptops used for teaching and research;
• Consult with IT department to install, manage, and maintain VDI for UNIX and Windows interoperability on lab computers; and
• Perform other duties as assigned.
