Description:
Responsibilities:
- assists with the processing of new referrals.
- supports licensed clinical staff with completion of client assessments.
- obtains product quotes, communicates with vendors, assists with funding request letters, tracks product orders/delivery, and labels/ inventories new equipment.
- monitors to ensure equipment is kept in safe working order and arranges maintenance and repairs, as required.
- prepares ‘low tech’ communication aids (e.g., visual supports, communication boards).
- assists with programming of high-tech augmentative and alternative communication devices.
- helps lead in-service training for employees (e.g., ergonomics, intro to communication).
- completes general office duties, as required (e.g., photocopying, filing).
- helps develop systems for maintaining accurate statistics/records.
- compiles statistical data and helps prepare reports.
- participates in departmental, IPP, team, and other meetings to ensure effective communication and quality service.
- ensures adequate supplies are available for the program/ office areas and that these areas are well-organized.
- compiles resource information, as needed.
- participates in discussions on ways to improve the service.
- ensures a safe and supportive environment for clients.
- schedules and conducts individual and group interventions.
- follows established treatment procedures/protocols.
- observes clients’ response and records observations.
- communicates above to clinical staff (and other staff, as appropriate) in a clear and concise manner.
- compiles client/caregiver resources, as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: Graduate of a recognized 2-year Physiotherapy Assistant/ Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA-PTA) program, e.g., the PTA/OTA Diploma Program offered at the Nova Scotia Community college (NSCC). Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities, mental health issues, and/or behavioral challenges. Demonstrated ability to relate well with clients, families, and other members of the inter-disciplinary team. Excellent observational skills. Demonstrated ability to problem-solve, seek solutions through collaboration, and provide leadership. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Ability to work independently to complete delegated tasks / programs. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Demonstrated accountability, initiative, and good judgment. Previous experience working as a PTA/OTA, especially in residential care, an asset. Prior training or experience with communication disorders/challenges an asset. Proficiency with computers and relevant applications, e.g., Excel. Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license.
SALARY SCALE: As per the collective agreement.
