Band 7 Physiotherapy Team Lead- Elective Orthopaedics (ECAS)
We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 7 Physiotherapist to join our expanding elective orthopaedic therapy team at our Elective Centre, Ashford Hospital, Surrey.
There is excellent multi-disciplinary working with the orthopaedic teams and involvement in enhanced recovery programmes for the elective joint arthroplasty service, a fast-paced day surgery unit and other elective surgeries such as spinal and arthroscopic surgery, where we strive for excellent patient outcomes.
This post requires advanced clinical knowledge and experience in the management elective Orthopaedic inpatient and day case procedures, and the ability to improve services in line with GIRFT guidance and NICE guidelines. The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership jointly with with our established band 7 physiotherapy team leader to our expanding elective service, ensuring we build a strong team and support our staff with their development and provide excellent patient care.
The successful candidate will be expected to support the weekend service and late cover until 8pm in order to support our efforts to reduce length of stay.

Responsibilities:

Take a leading role in the advanced assessment, clinical diagnosis, treatment and management of patients after orthopaedic surgery.
Be responsible for the day to day operational delivery of therapy services to the elective orthopaedic wards and day surgery unit.
Work autonomously as an expert clinician, liaising effectively with other health professionals to ensure evidence based delivery of service within professional scope of practice.
Provide leadership in specialist field and be a key contributor to quality improvement, research and audit.
Support staff development and training across professional and organisational boundaries.
Participate in weekend working on a rota basis and late cover to the elective orthopaedic ward and day surgery unit.
The Trust provides a 24 hour, 7 day per week, 365 days per year service. The post holder will be required to work to cover services in the evening, at weekends and Bank Holidays in order to maintain essential services. How contracted hours are worked may be changed in line with the needs of the service following consultation.

Clinical
To take a leading role in the advanced assessment, clinical diagnosis and treatment of patients following orthopaedic interventions. These patients often have complex and or chronic presentation.
To be responsible as an autonomous practitioner to undertake a significant specialist clinical caseload within Orthopaedics.
To take a leading role in the training and development of staff in this speciality.
To develop services in line with recent NHS initiatives and guidance.
To demonstrate the physical ability to carry out physiotherapy assessments and interventions, including highly developed manual physiotherapy techniques and therapeutic handling. This includes frequent moderate to high physical effort.
To take part in weekend working and late cover on a rota basis.
Leadership or managerial
To plan effectively the daily management of a caseload of patients by prioritising clinical work, responding to urgent referrals and frequently unpredictable work patterns.
To maintain the high standards of the service by contributing to the individual team and service objectives.
To be able to prioritise clinical and managerial work and balance other patient related and professional activities as the department requires.
To supervise junior staff, senior staff and therapy assistants where appropriate.
To participate in the appraisal scheme as an appraiser and to be appraised.
To demonstrate a high level of understanding of clinical governance and clinical risk.
To attend appropriate meetings both within and outside of the trust
Education
To participate in clinical supervision sessions as a member of the MDT.
To participate in any training sessions as a recipient and facilitator.
To disseminate any training received to other staff and healthcare professionals.
To be actively involved in special interest groups in order to share and disseminate knowledge to colleagues.
Technology or system support
To maintain timely and accurate statistical information as required by senior staff and managers.
To be responsible for the accurate input of clinical information onto the trust IT system and manage the clinical workload diary.
To keep up to date with advances in technology.
Service improvement
To regularly participate in and lead on appropriate work related research/evaluation projects and to be aware of current research relevant to clinical area.
To utilise audit skills to evaluate the clinical and cost effectiveness of the physiotherapy service to the specialist clinical area.
To evaluate your own clinical effectiveness
To undertake and present relevant evidence based projects.
Communications and Engagement
To be highly effective in communicating with other partner organisations in order to provide an effective service. This will include; consultants, OSD team, MSK dept, nursing teams.
To initiate and maintain good contact with service users regarding the development of the service.
To provide advice to other disciplines both internally and externally to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to care.
To be able to communicate complex and sensitive information to patients, carers and other staff including imparting unwelcome news relating to their prognosis and gaining consent for treatment.
To assess patients’ understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.
To maintain accurate records in line with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, Trust and service standards and policies. To ensure that records of directly managed staff also comply with these standards.
To use a range of verbal and non verbal communication tools to communicate effectively and sensitively with patients in order to initiate treatment and achieve treatment concordance. This may include patients who may have difficulties in understanding or communicating
