Curragh Mine, location in the township of Blackwater, is one of the largest open-cut coal mines in the Queensland Bowen Basin. Curragh produces more than 12 million tonnes of coal per year with a mining fleet which includes 4 large draglines. Coal is mined from two mining areas and washed through two large plants with a number of different metallurgical products produced.

Responsibilities:

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Pit Geologist to be based at our Curragh Mine. This permanent role reports to the Senior Geologist, and works an 8/6 roster.
You will work to optimise operational performance through provision of best practice geological, geotechnical and coal quality information to internal stakeholders to aid in optimal safety, coal recovery and quality. An effective communicator with a strong production focus, you will have the skills and drive to actively support the geology function on site.

Some of your responsibilities may include:

  • Identifying coal loss / dilution in combination with Survey data and quantify this information.
  • Actively participating in risk assessments and drafting of JSA’s to ensure workers are aware of the geotechnical hazards in line with the PHMP.
  • Engaging with Curragh and Contract Operations regularly to ensure compliance to dig design and minimise coal loss / dilution.
  • Liaising with and provide geological / geotechnical information to stakeholders to assist with the design process.
  • Completing the weekly Geotechnical Report, ensuring currency of information and send email notification to site.
  • Assisting in creation of short term grids for design process, accurate coal loss / dilution measurements and for coal mining reconciliation purposes

About you:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Geology/Geoscience;
  • Previous 4+ years experience in a similar Pit Geologist role;
  • Resource and coal quality modelling experience.
  • Experience with mining software packages such as Vulcan, ISite, Geobank and GeologyCore;
  • Problem solving and strong analytical skills with a focus on continuous improvement;
