Join our Urban Planning and Environment (UPE) Department, the delegated Development Authority for the City of Edmonton. As a Planner II, you’ll play a crucial role in processing, reviewing, and managing applications to rezone properties, amend statutory plans, and facilitate roadway closures.
As a Planner II within the Planning Coordination team, you will act as a specialist in your field of work and will provide mentorship to more junior Planners and Planning Technicians within the team. You will effectively identify issues, negotiate, and implement creative solutions to planning and land use matters with the development industry, interdisciplinary professionals internally and externally and the public. Your professional skills and customer service focus will assist you in managing, prioritizing and completing your assignments in this dynamic environment.

SKILLS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS:
- Solid understanding of urban planning principles, development practices, relevant legislation, plans, policies, and bylaws
- Strong analytical skills to interpret technical information and regulations, make informed decisions, negotiate and resolve sensitive issues
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills to build and maintain stakeholder relationships
- Effective organizational, project management skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively under pressure
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Urban or Regional Planning or a related degree
- Four (4) years of progressively responsible planning experience in the area of land development plannin
Responsibilities:
- Lead interdisciplinary teams in reviewing complex, potentially contentious development proposals related to statutory plans and zoning in both a site-specific and broader area context
- Formulate professional recommendations that take into account a broad range of interdisciplinary perspectives including land use and built form, transportation, utility servicing, the community and development industry aspirations; while navigating the often complex regulatory framework of City Policies, Guidelines and Best Practices
- Provide professional planning and advisory and consultative services on land use proposals to the development industry, community groups, the public and other agencies
- Provide options to resolve conflict or assist in developing alternative plans or recommendations for projects
- Plan and execute Public Engagement activities including public meetings to explain planning proposals and to gather feedback from those affected by projects
- Implement statutory plans, guidelines and design studies
- Prepare reports for consideration by City Council and colleagues
- Make presentations to colleagues, the public and other stakeholders
- Appear before City Council and Community Leagues, as required
- Provide advice, guidance and mentorship to Planners and Planning Technicians
- Related duties as required
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Urban or Regional Planning or a related degree
- Four (4) years of progressively responsible planning experience in the area of land development planning
