The Planning and Development Department is seeking two (2) Planning Assistants reporting to the Manager, Planning (Development Planning). One positions is temporary full time until approximately August 2026 and the other is temporary full time for approx. two (2) years from start date.
The Planning Assistants will provide overall support for Planning and Development and in particular for the function of development planning, including providing front line customer service, answering public enquiries regarding zoning and land use regulations and related planning matters, in-taking development applications, providing general guidance to development applicants, website updates and participating in project specific public engagement. Also, as part of the essential duties, you will review and coordinate building permit applications, business licensing requirements and other plans to ensure compliance with the zoning bylaw and other Council policies. As project lead, you will also be processing coach house and other smaller scale development applications and undertake maintenance and support of data within the City’s permitting software tool as it relates planning and development applications. You will also assist senior planners on complex projects as required, and perform related duties.
You will have a Diploma in Urban Planning plus courses in urban design, geography or a related discipline with experience in municipal planning (preferred), or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Sound knowledge of the practices, principles, techniques, methods and procedures applicable to municipal planning operations is also required. Attention to detail and time management skills are must-have qualifications for this position. In addition, you will have strong computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) as well as excellent communication and customer service skills.
For temporary full-time positions of eight (8) months or longer, a City employee who is successful on the posting will have the right to revert to their former position.
