We are looking for a Platoon Supervisor to work with our Ambulance Department to help us continue in our mission to serve our community with Kindness, Accountability, Respect, and Teamwork.
Reporting to the Deputy Chief, the Platoon Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the operational readiness and the day-to-day operations of the Paramedic Service. The Platoon Supervisor will also be required to monitor, evaluate, and supervise the Paramedics working on the assigned shift.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Certification, and Experience

  • Completion of post-secondary education in a Paramedic program or equivalent.
  • Currently certified as a Primary Care Paramedic or Advanced Care Paramedic by a provincial based hospital in the province of Ontario.
  • Joint Health and Safety Part 2 Public Safety Sector certification.
  • Meets all requirements to be employed as Paramedic within the Province of Ontario as outlines in the Ambulance Act.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience as a Primary Care and/or Advanced Care Paramedic.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in a leadership role within a Paramedic Service.
  • Experience with staff scheduling (asset).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of Ontario’s land ambulance legislation, regulations, and current practices.
  • Knowledge of and interpretation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Knowledge and training in Designated Officer program and applicable legislation and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all legislations and regulations pertinent to the role, including relevant Collective Agreement, Highway Traffic Act, and Paramedic Services in Ontario. This list is not considered to be fully inclusive of all legislations and regulations that are applicable to the position.
  • Knowledge and ability to implement Incident Management System (IMS) and Emergency Management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under stressful situations and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to manage complex emergency scenes, liaise with community partners, and assist in responding, controlling, mitigating and recovery from disasters.
  • Critical thinking skills by systematically obtaining and assessing relevant information, utilizing reflective reasoning, and taking action in decision making, with a realistic understanding of the issues and the impact of decision on the department/County.

Hours of Work: Shift Work

Responsibilities:

Operational Leadership

  • Performs the responsibilities of the position within the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the applicable Federal, Provincial and Municipal statutes; performs the responsibilities of the position consistent with the Operational policies of the County.
  • Monitors and ensures Paramedics comply with the Ambulance Act, its regulations and the Ministry of Health Emergency Health Services Branch Standards and all other relevant statutes, regulations, standards, protocols and practices and with the County and Hospital’s Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensures the scheduling of Paramedics in accordance with the appropriate Collective Agreement and operational policy; ensures and facilitates call-ins as necessary.
  • Conducts the preliminary investigation process in response to public/allied agency concerns or inquiries into patient care issues or professional conduct up to the development of draft reports proposing initial recommendations to the Deputy Chief.
  • Reviews operational forms/reports for accuracy and completion and, if necessary, action internally prior to submission to Senior Management.
  • Monitors and evaluates Paramedics’ skills, performance and documentation through direct observation and review of the electronic Patient Call Report (ePCR) database and reports any major or critical errors to the Deputy Chief, taking necessary corrective/disciplinary action as required.
  • Monitors base supplies and collaborates with Deputy Chief to ensure proper stocking levels.
  • Oversees maintenance of ambulance fleet, patient care equipment and facilities, ensuring preventative maintenance as per Dufferin County Paramedic Service (DCPS) policy and procedures.
  • Monitors and ensures Paramedics comply with Basic and Advanced Life Support Patient Care Standards, the Ambulance Act, Regulations and Standards and all relevant acts, regulations, standard, protocols and practices that may relate to the Paramedics’ daily duties and obligations.
  • Works co-operatively with staff of the CACC, Base Hospital, Ministry of Health and other health care service agencies and departments.
  • Assists with the development and delivery of educational curriculum as required.
  • Accountable for annual Employee Performance Appraisals of individual staff members and follows up on objectives.
  • Implements and monitors activities that assure promotion of quality, patient safety & risk management.

Staff leadership

  • Assists the Management Team with staff development, performing duties related to education and training, preparing, and delivering Training Programs and service educational requirement.
  • Creates a high-performance environment by setting clear, realistic goals and work plans and providing open and consistent feedback and coaching.
  • Monitors and evaluates performance of directly reporting staff; holds staff accountable for goal achievement and results, promoting learning, and personal growth.
  • Mentors directly reporting staff and provides an engaging environment where team members are motivated to achieve goals.
  • Works to build an inclusive and productive continuous improvement environment that promotes collaboration, teamwork, setting performance standards and providing relevant feedback.
  • Contributes to the evaluation of paramedics’ performance and student placements.
  • Recognizes and celebrates the successes of individuals and teams.
  • Participates in the strategic planning for the land ambulance service; contributes to budget development and monitoring activities.
  • Operates in a fiscally responsible manner and identifies opportunities for cost savings

Health and Safety

  • Protects own health and safety and the safety of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately, and attending all relevant in-services regarding occupational health and safety.
  • Ensures directly reporting staff are trained in health and safety and where appropriate, wear the applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while in the workplace.
  • Follows all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act

Other Duties

  • Responds to emergencies as outlined in the Deployment Plan or as determined to be appropriate.
  • Attends public relations activities.
  • Performs the duties of the Deputy Chief in their absence (as assigned).
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chief or Deputy Chief.
