Position Summary:
Responsible for the operation of a two-way communications system, as well as monitors, receives, relays, records police alarms, intra-departmental calls, emergency calls, signals and other messages. Dispatches the appropriate emergency personnel and equipment to incidents and emergencies.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes closed circuit television monitors and related emergency dispatch center equipment to monitor law enforcement and safety conditions. Identifies unauthorized activity or potentially problematic situations and dispatches appropriate police officers to investigate situations as appropriate.
  • Monitors fire, public safety alarms, and card access systems, and dispatches personnel to investigate problem sites as necessary.
  • Operates a two-way radio communications system to dispatch officers to calls in their area of coverage.
  • Initiates “Code Red”, “Code Pink”, or other emergency calls as required. Utilizes paging system as necessary.
  • Reports questionable or problematic conditions to supervisor, Police Sergeant, or others as appropriate.

  • High School diploma

Preferred:

  • 6-12 months of related office/clerical/administrative support experience is preferred.

Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • Requires the ability to operate personal computers, report terminals, or computer-based equipment for data entry/retrieval and checking.
  • Typical applications software used: Basic use of word processing programs.
  • Requires excellent telephone communications/customer relation skills.
  • Must have the flexibility to be temporarily re-assigned to any other site in the system.
  • This position requires a high degree of accuracy and alertness in dispatching police personnel, and the dispatcher must maintain a calm demeanor and composure in responding to crisis situations.
  • Preference will be given to those who have a minimum of one (1) year of paid or verifiable full time equivalent volunteer experience which involved working on automated equipment as a dispatcher in a police or fire department, EMS or ambulance agency;
  • Utilizes closed circuit television monitors and related emergency dispatch center equipment to monitor law enforcement and safety conditions. Identifies unauthorized activity or potentially problematic situations and dispatches appropriate police officers to investigate situations as appropriate.
  • Monitors fire, public safety alarms, and card access systems, and dispatches personnel to investigate problem sites as necessary.
  • Operates a two-way radio communications system to dispatch officers to calls in their area of coverage.
  • Initiates “Code Red”, “Code Pink”, or other emergency calls as required. Utilizes paging system as necessary.
  • Reports questionable or problematic conditions to supervisor, Police Sergeant, or others as appropriate.
  • Writes accurate reports of public safety incidents. Maintains police activity logs and produces standard manual and computer-based reports and maintains current information in established manual and computer-based files.
  • Assists visitors and patients. Provides basic information on public safety procedures, or to direct them to the appropriate person or destination.
  • Operates a computerized information system i.e. CJIS and IMC to access and record data and
  • information;
  • Produces standard memos and reports. Reviews all written material for spelling and grammatical errors. May complete or produce standard forms or update policies and procedures.
  • Exchanges and provides basic procedural information to personnel within and outside of the department.
  • Receives phone calls and messages, refers matters to appropriate person within department.
  • Provides basic assistance for the preparation of reports or projects. Gathers specified documents, files, records, etc. Checks, tabulates and arranges basic data.
  • Maintains office files and records.
  • Utilizes personal computers or remote data terminals to view, record, or verify information in established database files.
  • Orders office supplies and basic maintenance of office equipment.
  • Performs miscellaneous clerical duties: Collate, sort, fax, file, distribute and retrieve documents and mail. Records and relays phone messages.
  • Required to work 2 full shifts a month equivalent to 16hrs.
