UPD has 172 authorized positions including 83 state certified Police Officers, 57 Security Officers, 15 Communications Officers, 8 administrative support personnel, and 5 Records Technicians. The department maintains a fully staffed investigations section, a community services unit, a recruiting unit, a training division unit, a victim advocate, and an Emergency Communications Center.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Starting Annual Salary: $65,000
The elements of the selection process are: online application, Personal History Statement, initial interview, records check, background investigation, Chief’s panel, fingerprint check, and final selection.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of related work experience with demonstrated progression in administrative responsibility and/or management duties.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of Texas Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedures, and City Ordinances.
  • Working knowledge of personal computer applications and TLETS.
  • Working knowledge of the Uniform Crime Reporting System.
  • Willingness to take initiative, identify and resolve problems.
  • Must possess strong leadership abilities.
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal, leadership, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Maintains attention to detail and utilizes sound judgment.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS AND FACTORS:

  • TCIC/NCIC Certification or the ability to obtain within timeframe set by the department.
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) Telecommunications Certification or the ability to obtain within timeframe set by the department.
  • Must have a Texas Class C driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
  • Must submit to and be able to pass a criminal history background check.
