Job description
An exciting new opportunity has arisen within the Retail Crime Team with the expansion of the team to include a Police Staff Investigator. The team was first established in 2023 as a trial and was made permanent in March 2024. It consists of a sergeant and four officers who complete the investigations on the majority of shop thefts within the Force. The work involved will include the collection of evidence, obtaining statements and preparing files for secondary investigation (primarily for arrest and charge). There is also partnership working with other Police departments around problem solving of repeat victims and prolific offenders, as well as working with national retail chains central security departments, and the National Business Crime Centre. Work is also undertaken with individual premises and the Northamptonshire Business Crime Partnership.
Since the inception of the team, it has improved positive outcomes for this type of offence (in June 2024 43% of all shopliftings were resolved with a positive outcome). It has also increased the confidence within the retail community (in the last 12 months there has been an increase of 31% in reported shop thefts). The positive work of the team was commented on within the HMICFRS PEEL inspection report in February 2024 “has led to an increase in charge rates for shoplifting, improving outcomes for victims and bringing offenders to justice ….. with dedicated investigators focusing on shoplifting crimes. This has already improved the force’s charge rates for shoplifting, as well as the trust and confidence of the business community.”
Due to the nature of the role, expected working hours will be between 0800 and 2000 Monday to Friday, which will mean there is no shift enhancement for this role. There is very limited scope for agile working due to the expectations of the role and the business need, with the majority of duty being carried out from Darby House, Wellingborough, where the team is currently based
