Position Status: Temporary, between 8 – 40 hours, during the voting period
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is seeking numerous Polling Clerks to join our Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (OCEO) Team to assist with the upcoming 2024 District Captain and District Council Elections. These are temporary honoraria-based positions to work polling stations October 28 – November 5, 2024. Polling Clerks are required to attend mandatory in-person training (October 17 – 19), staff a polling station for the entirety of its opening hours (7:30 am – 9/10:00 pm), and must be available to return election materials and take part in follow-up meetings on the days following the vote (November 6 – 8). Candidates should be prepared to work from their assigned polling location within the Province of Alberta, and travel to Edmonton, Alberta, as required.
Poll Clerks (PC) will assist the Deputy Returning Officer (DRO) of each assigned polling station. On occasion and under certain circumstances, the PC may have to assume additional responsibilities set forth by the Chief Electoral Officer. Polling locations will be running in various locations throughout Alberta, and the PC will be responsible for helping to ensure the electoral process is carried out in accordance with the Elections and Referenda Act.

The PC will be responsible for the fair and efficient running of the 2024 District Elections, including:

  • Maintaining a smooth overall operation of the in-person polling station,
  • Completing the appropriate paperwork to record that an elector has voted, and
  • Uphold safety guidelines and procedures to ensure electors vote in an orderly fashion.

The PC will possess organizational, leadership, communication and management skills that will facilitate and ensure the efficient and effective operations of the 2024 District Elections.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills with experience using Microsoft Office software.
  • Ability to support voters who may require additional assistance, as required.
  • Possess basic analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail is required.
  • Adaptable and flexible with changing priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Possess political awareness and sensitivity when interacting with others.
  • Ability to work well with a team or independently.
  • Working knowledge of Cree and/or Michif is considered an asset.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Deep knowledge of the Métis Nation of Alberta, its Bylaws, history, goals, and objectives. Knowledge of Métis culture and issues affecting Métis people is an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of elections and voting processes is an asset.
  • Must not be an elected member of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
  • Note: A person who is the spouse, child, brother, sister, mother or father of a candidate for the District Elections is ineligible to be appointed as a Poll Clerk.

  • Ability to travel to Edmonton, Alberta. Additional travel within Alberta may be required.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends.
  • On days of vote, Polling Clerks will be required to work 7:30 am – 9/10:00 pm.
  • Must be able to provide a clean Police Information Check (Criminal Record Check).
