QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Degree in relevant discipline, e.g. investment management, finance, mathematics or economics. Honours degree would be preferred.
  • Having or studying towards a Certified Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or other appropriate professional qualification would be advantageous.
  • 5 years’ experience in fixed-income or portfolio management.
  • Exposure to trading and/or portfolio construction, analysis and multi-asset management allocation.
  • Understanding of South African and International macro-economic drivers

Responsibilities:

JOB PURPOSE:

Be actively involved in the trading of fixed income instruments across various yield curves. Construct and directly manage investment portfolios based on relevant investment mandates and client requirements, within the Fixed Income team’s philosophy and strategy in order to achieve desired client and portfolio outcomes, and the Momentum Group’s strategic objectives. Implement the fixed income team’s process and philosophy.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage the Investment Portfolios:

  • Takes accountability for end-to-end trading and portfolio management.
  • Gather research and analyse the SA markets in order to obtain insight into current trends and to keep abreast with economic context.
  • Build and maintain models to validate or enhance investment decision-making.
  • Contribute to asset allocation decisions for multi-asset funds based on agreed house view and tactical views.
  • Construct Fixed Income portfolio construction and security selection based on the research process and models, as well as rigorous discussion and debate within the Fixed Income team.
  • Contribute to the House View Investment Committee and Asset Allocation Committee and implement decisions and views across various mandates.
  • Manage investment portfolios based on mandate and client expectations ensuring that portfolio management and risk management elements are rigorous and consistently applied.
  • Implement and advise portfolio rebalancing execution and cash management to the relevant stakeholders.
  • Monitor trading activities to ensure best execution and engage with stakeholders within the dealing environment regarding trade limits and trading strategy.
  • Provide technical advice and expertise regarding the portfolio construction in order to support sales or marketing initiatives.
  • Build and maintain models to monitor risk and diversification of portfolios on an asset class and instrument level.
  • Ensure asset allocation views are reflected, implemented, and aligned according to the relevant strategic views across mandates.
  • Contribute to the Fixed Income analysis process used for portfolio construction and investment decisions.
  • Position funds tactically to enhance returns.
  • Use derivatives for portfolios if required to enhance/protect returns (based on mandates).
  • Collate investment and performance data and insights and present to relevant committees in order to provide a tactical and strategic outlook for the SA Fixed Income market.
  • Monitor and present portfolio performance and conduct attribution analysis.
  • Take responsibility of all aspects related to the management of investment portfolios.
  • Ensure asset allocation views are implemented and aligned according to the Fixed income view.
  • Focus on main investment themes and risks with material impact of investment decisions (performance, risk, income) in a highly complex environment.
  • Contribute to the research and innovation of new approaches to investment management.
  • Take accountability on portfolios, with oversight on portfolios’ adherence to mandate.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the fixed income investment philosophy and help influence the environment (markets and stakeholders).
  • Contribute to strategic direction of business and investments.
  • Collaborate with Fixed Income team colleagues and provide support and coverage when necessary
