Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking a candidate with doctoral training in an environmental health-related discipline such as exposure assessment, molecular or computational toxicology and biology, environmental chemistry, statistics, bioinformatics, geography, or epidemiology for an NIEHS funded T32 postdoctoral fellowship in Environmental Science and Engineering. The initial appointment period is 1 year with a maximum of 2 years of support. This fellowship is part of a robust training program, encompassing epidemiology, biostatistics and environmental sciences and affords the fellow the opportunity to pursue mentored research in their areas of interest. Fellows are encouraged to collaborate with UNC Investigators as well as adjunct training faculty at the NIEHS and EPA. This training program will prepare environmental health scientists to be future leaders in environmental health science collaborations.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

The typical post-doctoral trainee will have completed highly relevant doctoral training in an environmental health-related discipline such as exposure assessment, molecular or computational toxicology and biology, environmental chemistry, statistics, bioinformatics, geography, or epidemiology and have been awarded a Ph.D. or its equivalent.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES, AND EXPERIENCE

Due to Federally-mandated funding restrictions, the post-doctoral trainee MUST be a US citizen or permanent resident.
Strong data collection and management skills are essential. Programming skills are required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, COMPETENCIES, AND EXPERIENCE

Relevant work experience preferred. We seek individuals with high energy, creativity, attention to accuracy, and the ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team. Consistent with NIH policies for T32 fellowships, to be eligible for this award, individuals must be a citizen or a noncitizen national of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of appointment.

Responsibilities:

The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) currently consists of 19 primary tenured/tenure track faculty, 10 fixed-term faculty, 8 joint faculty and 43 adjunct faculty. For FY2022, our department administered $9.1 million in sponsored research funding, and $5.8 million in funding from various funding sources including NC Collaboratory, recharges, contracts, fellowships, endowments and State funds. As of Spring 2023, the department had 172 graduate students enrolled (77 MPH, 31 MSEE, MS, or MSPH, 64 PhD) and 48 undergraduate (BSPH) students. The department utilizes a total of 70,537 square feet, comprised of 42,675 square feet of research/laboratory space; 22,557 square feet of office space; 2,642 square feet of conference room space and 2,663 square feet in miscellaneous space (i.e.: central computer/telecommunications and storage).
The department also houses the Biomarker Mass Spectrometry facility, a core facility of the UNC Center for Environmental Health and Susceptibility, which is dedicated to advanced chemical analysis of biomarkers and other compounds relevant to toxicological and environmental research. Equipment available in the facility is described under Resources for the Chemistry Core.
