We will recruit for the vacancy ourselves and do not appreciate unasked for services from recruitment agencies. However, sharing in your network is appreciated. We are looking for a candidate with:

  • PhD in a social science discipline (development sociology, anthropology, human geography, etc);
  • experience with mixed method approaches, including qualitative interviews, ethnographic methodologies, and survey methodologies;
  • familiarity with qualitative and quantitative analysis;
  • experience in working in village contexts in rural India;
  • familiarity with and interest in the political economy of agrarian change, with a particular focus on India and/or upland communities;
  • evidence of potential to publish in international journals;
  • strong analytic and communication skills, ability to process complex information and translate it into accessible and usable formats for policymakers and local communities.

Responsibilities:

The position is for 24 months at 0.8 at the Rural Sociology Group of Wageningen University, with periods of fieldwork in Northeast India. The start date is 1 June 2025.

In this exciting position:

  • you will conduct literature reviews, and develop research questions, methodology and project design, related to the topic of focus;
  • you will plan and execute fieldwork and data collection using mixed-method approaches at the village scale in Northeast India;
  • you will engage with relevant stakeholders and build networks in the case study area;
  • you will perform qualitative and quantitative data analysis as appropriate;
  • you will draft and publish high quality journal articles in international journals;
  • you will develop your career as a researcher, and work towards applying for further grants and funding.

In addition to these first-rate employee benefits, you will of course receive a good salary. Depending on your experience, we offer a competitive gross salary of between € 3670 (scale 10.3) and € 5278 (scale 10.12) for a full-time working week of 38 hours (scale 10), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreements for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU). Initially, we offer you a one-year contract, which will then be extended to an open-ended contract if there is mutual enthusiasm.
