The Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering (SSE) at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Solutions for Health in the Schulich School of Engineering.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Momentum Director, Solutions for Health, Dr. Elena Di Martino in the Schulich School of Engineering, the Post-Doctoral Associate will be facilitating interactions and collaborations with the Biomedical Engineering Industry. The Post-Doctoral Associate will also support collaborations between researchers within the Solutions for Health in the SSE and across the University of Calgary and beyond, working with a wide range of stakeholders with multiple research projects.
This position is a full-time, 40-hours-per-week, one-year position with the potential for renewal/extension. The Post-Doctoral Associate will work in an environment with periods of heavy workload and competing demands. It is anticipated that this position will require some local travel.
The primary purpose of this position is to facilitate and coordinate activities and initiatives aimed at increasing collaboration with BME Industry in the region and beyond. This includes overseeing several BME projects and various partnerships within and outside the University, working with Research Services, the International Office and Innovate Calgary to develop and execute strategies for partnership development. The Post-Doctoral Associate will facilitate cross-campus and external collaboration on Solutions for Health-related projects and maintain excellent relationships with internal and external stakeholders. There are also significant responsibilities associated with partnership agreements, including writing research proposals and contracts and reporting to granting agencies and sponsors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A PhD in science, kinesiology, medicine, or engineering is required.
  • Excellent knowledge of the biomedical engineering sector is required.
  • Experience in the implementation of biomedical engineering or health-related projects and initiatives is highly desirable.
  • Highly effective organizational skills and communications skills is required.
  • Ability to effectively negotiate solutions to complex problems and balance competing interests.
  • Knowledge of and general understanding of research-related activities such as manuscript reviews, grant writing, planning of scientific meetings.
  • Excellent organizational and analytic skills and the ability to develop innovative solutions that meet the needs of diverse partners.
  • Proficiency with computers and a variety of software including Microsoft Office, web-based marketing, social media, videoconferencing.
  • Proven ability to demonstrate personal initiative and to work independently.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains excellent relationships with internal and external stakeholders involved with Health-related projects and research initiatives.
  • Identifies new collaborations with industrial partners locally.
  • Works closely with the VPR Engagement Office and Institutes for Transdisciplinary Scholarships to identify key stakeholders for new collaborations (ideally with possible involvement of industrial partners) and bringing them together.
  • Provides leadership for grant applications and industry partnership agreements. Recommends actions, suggestions, assists with writing and personally engages with all stakeholders.
  • Liaises with researchers and industrial partners, responding to communication enquiries as needed.
  • Independently assesses new opportunities and brings them to the attention of the director.
  • Assists with data collection, management, and analysis of BME research activity.
