A Postdoctoral Fellowship Position in Biopsychosocial Influences on Post-Operative Shoulder Pain is being offered through the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Duke Clinical Research Institute Musculoskeletal and Surgical Sciences (DCRI MASS) Therapeutic Area at Duke University under the direction of Dr. Steven George.
This position is for a two-year appointment, with a third year available based on performance and funding availability. Duties include project implementation, coordinating and assisting prospective data collection, troubleshooting and finding solutions to study problems, data analyses and interpretation, and presentation of the findings in the form of oral/poster presentations at scientific meetings and publications in peer-review journals. The Fellow will be expected to develop projects that focus on outcome prediction using cohort data, electronic health record data and/or administrative claims data. Total shoulder arthroplasty will be the primary patient population of focus but there will be opportunities for the Fellow to collaborate on projects in other surgical and non-surgical populations as long as these are aligned with applying biopsychosocial framework to study pain outcomes. The Fellow is also expected to make contributions to the Duke Research Community that will advance his/her own research career, as well as contribute to a growing culture of clinical research within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Duke Clinical Research Institute.

Preferred candidates will have: - expertise in rehabilitation science, movement science, implementation science, epidemiology, health services research and/or clinical research, as evidenced by prior research and relevant clinical training (e.g. DPT, ATC, DC, MD) is desired.

• completion of formal research training program, as evidenced by degree completion (e.g. DSc, PhD or equivalent in one of the areas outlined above.

• prior experiences in data management, data analysis, manuscript writing, and scientific presentations. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Additional expectations: - Establish a mentoring team that consists of primary mentor and secondary mentors from the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Duke Clinical Research Institute.

• Individual and team scholarship productivity, which may include mentoring responsibilities for junior faculty researchers or trainees.

• Conformance to standards of responsible conduct in research, and accepted standards of research practice. - Maintenance of records of research activity as per Duke University requirements and the understanding that these records will remain the property of Duke University when Fellowship ends. - Adherence to Duke University standards regarding human subjects research, this includes maintaining training certifications in a timely manner. - Open and timely discussion with the primary mentor regarding all facets of the Postdoctoral Appointee’s research activities. - Appointees are encouraged to consult the AAMC Compact Between for suggested guidelines for the Postdoctoral -Mentor relationship. - Collegial conduct towards members of the research group and others as described in the Duke University School of Medicine Honor Code of Professional Conduct and other relevant conduct policies pertaining to the schools at Duke University.

Education
Min Degree Requirements: Clinical training and licensure in relevant field is highly desired (e.g. MD, DPT, ATC, DC) but exceptions will be made for those with methodological expertise as evidence through peer reviewed publications and/or completion of an advanced fellowship. Please state the need for an exception in the cover letter. In additional formal research training is highly desired, including a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g. Sc.D), but exceptions for other research degrees may be considered if coupled with a clinical degree (e.g. MD, MPH combination).
If the candidate has completed all of the requirements for a degree, but the degree has not been formally conferred; the candidate may present evidence of completion of the degree requirements, together with a statement documenting the date on which the degree is to be conferred.

Other Credential/Experiential Requirements: The incumbent must be registered with Duke University’s Post Doc Office and per the following requirements:

• The term of this appointment is limited
• The appointment involves substantially full-time research or scholarship, but may include teaching responsibilities.
• The appointment is viewed as preparatory for a full time academic or research career.
• The appointment is not part of a clinical research training program, unless research training under the supervision of a senior mentor is a primary purpose of the appointment.
• The appointee works under the supervision of a scholar or a Department at Duke University.
• The appointee has the freedom, and is expected to publish the results of his or her research or scholarship during the period of the appointment.
