Description:

DEPARTMENT

The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) is a world-leading digital repository which provides digital data archiving services for UK archaeology. We are a recognised component of UKRI’s research infrastructure and hold the Core Trust Seal. We are based within the Department of Archaeology in the medieval King’s Manor building in central York, but work closely with external partners, both in Higher Education and in the public and commercial archaeological sectors.
This is a particularly exciting time in our development, as with UK infrastructure funding for our services for archaeology and heritage science, and a new generation of international research projects, we are working to progress a number of challenges in finding, accessing, producing and reusing digital resources. We are also working with a range of leading European digital infrastructures, including taking a lead role in ARIADNE, and with collaborations with DARIAH, CLARIN, OPERAS and E-RIHS.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATION NEEDED

  • An undergraduate degree and PhD in archaeology, heritage science, information science and related areas, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies
  • Research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance ADS strengths and strategy
  • Highly developed communication skills
  • Ability to write up research outcomes for publication
  • Ability to present at conferences and to represent the ADS at international meetings.
  • Ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals, and to identify sources of funding and to work with others to secure funding.
    Interview date: 28 November 2024
For informal enquiries: please contact Holly Wright on holly.wright@york.ac.uk

Responsibilities:

This new role will support the ADS Director and Research Projects Manager in three EU-funded projects. In ECHOES we are part of a consortium which is building the European Collaborative Cloud for Cultural Heritage (ECCCH); in AUTOMATA (one of the first ECCCH services) we are exploring the use of robotics and AI in archaeology; in ARTEMIS we will be researching how the concept of Digital Twins can be developed in the heritage sector. The postholder will be expected to work with our international partners across each of these projects, doing research, attending project meetings, writing reports, and undertaking hands-on technical work. This role is on a fixed term basis for up to 4 years.
