Description:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Strong understanding of the global carbon cycle and the interactions between land and climate systems.
  • Proficiency in computational programming (e.g., Fortran, python) in HPC environments, with skills in data-model integration and ESM improvement and application
  • Strong proficiency in AI technology, with skills in applying AI methods for model optimization and uncertainty reduction.
  • Ability to communicate scientific findings effectively through publications and presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Basic knowledge of soil microorganisms, bioinformatics, or soil sciences is considered a plus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Hydrology, Earth System Science, Computer Science, Data Science, or a closely related field upon hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicants with strong AI backgrounds are strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience in improving or applying any Earth System Models (ESMs) or related computational models, particularly in the context of carbon cycle modeling or climate feedback mechanisms. Candidates with a strong focus on AI applications in these areas will be given priority.
  • Experience in conducting interdisciplinary research projects, with the ability to bridge gaps between different scientific disciplines.
  • A strong track record of peer-reviewed publications relevant to job responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyze and integrate multiscale datasets for E3SM parameterization and evaluation.
  • Apply artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for E3SM parameter optimization.
  • Develop and implement a hybrid model (AI-ESM) framework to quantify and reduce uncertainties in simulating soil carbon-climate feedback.
  • Execute coupled E3SM simulations to evaluate soil carbon-climate feedback mechanisms.
