Description:
ABOUT THE PROJECT
UTS is in the process of establishing a new initiative called the National Telecom Resilience Centre (NTRC). The NTRC will address critical gaps in Australia’s telecommunications resilience, focusing on the Triple Zero emergency call system and broader network functionality during outages. Leveraging UTS Tech Lab’s RF chamber and collaborative partnerships, the NTRC will conduct biannual cross-network testing campaigns, develop testing protocols, and engage in research to influence regulatory frameworks and industry standards. This initiative directly responds to the 2023 Optus Outage Review and will position UTS as a leader in telecom resilience research and innovation. About the role We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with strong expertise in telecommunications and telecommunications resilience. You will contribute to cutting-edge research on telecommunications resilience, with a focus on mobile communications, emergency services, and the development of industry standards. This role is a crucial part of the National Telecom Resilience Centre (NTRC). You will engage in applied research, focusing on emergency call system testing, multi-operator network behaviours, and novel protocols to improve network resilience. You will actively participate in industry standardisation efforts, publish research findings in high-impact journals, and contribute to the development of technologies affecting the mobile industry. You will also support the implementation of research outcomes to inform government policy and develop new testing protocols that address challenges in the evolving telecommunications ecosystem. You will get the chance to work directly with research core and radio equipment of all three mobile network operators in Australia at a dedicated and international first multi-operator testing facility at UTS. Key Selection Criteria: • A PhD in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on applied telecommunications research.• Proven ability to publish high-quality research and present findings to academic and industry audiences.• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to engage with diverse stakeholders.• In-depth understanding of mobile network protocols, including 3GPP standards and SIP signalling.• Expertise in resilience-focused research areas such as network failure mitigation, emergency services, and signalling protocols.• Familiarity with emerging technologies, including satellite communications and AI-driven network management.• Extensive experience in mobile network operations and research, including work on protocol testing, handset behaviour, and emergency call system analysis.• Demonstrated participation in standards organisations and contributions to international research collaborations.• A proven track record of publishing in high-impact journals and presenting at conferences. Why Join Us? • Be part of groundbreaking research that is transforming the way telecommunications infrastructure is managed.• Work on a high-profile project in collaboration with network operators and the telecommunications industry.• Supervise and mentor graduate interns, helping shape the next generation of telecommunications professionals.• Collaborate with world-class researchers at the UTS Tech Lab.• Contribute to a diverse and innovative research environment at UTS, recognized for its commitment to STEM diversity and indigenous engineering participation.
