Description:
Job Advert
We are seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Scientist with a background in Immunology to join the laboratory of Dr. Claudia Ribeiro de Almeida at the Babraham Institute. The successful candidate will be hired on a Wellcome Trust and Royal Society funded project, to strengthen our expertise in the discovery of new molecular mechanisms underpinning B-cell immunity.
This project will build on our recent findings on the RNA helicase DDX1, which revealed that B-cell positive selection and affinity maturation in the germinal centre are particularly sensitive to changes in protein synthesis efficiency (https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2025.01.10.632317v1). The PDRA will be using novel mouse models we have generated, to investigate how the quality of germinal centre reactions is determined by RNA helicase function in mRNA translation. The work involves in vivo analysis of mouse immune responses and ex vivo B-cell cultures, combined with a range of cellular, molecular and biochemical assays to assess B-cell function.
We are a dynamic team housed within the Immunology Programme at the Babraham Institute. Working at the interface of Immunology and RNA biology fields, we value proactivity, creative thinking, and a collaborative approach to research. The Babraham Institute is world-renowned for its research in life sciences and the post-holder will benefit from world-class research facilities, the collegial environment of the Institute and the wider scientific research community in the Cambridge area.
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in the Immunology field, with experience working with mouse models, flow cytometry and molecular assays. This is a limited term appointment with funding for this post available for a period of 2 years; we expect candidates to be on the trajectory and be willing to apply for individual fellowship funding to support them subsequently.
A full job specification and role requirements can be found attached to this vacancy.
Informal enquires can be addressed to Claudia Ribeiro de Almeida - Claudia.Ribeiro@babraham.ac.uk.

Applicants must hold a PhD or have their thesis submitted when commencing the post. Please note that you will be appointed on the starting salary of £33,500 per annum, if you have not yet been awarded your PhD. All newly appointed postdocs will commence on the salary/scale point that reflects the number of years’ post-PhD experience they hold on 30th June in the calendar year they commence employment.
Closing date for applications is Tuesday 18th February 2025. However, we reserve the right to close the vacancy early depending on the volume of applications received.
The Babraham Institute welcomes applications from all sections of society.
