JOB SUMMARY
The Next Generation Additive Manufacturing Research Laboratory (NextGen AMRL) at the Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing has an immediate vacancy for a Postdoctoral scholar in the area of smart metal additive manufacturing (AM). NextGen AMRL is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to fill this position. The postdoctoral researcher will assist the PI and Co-PIs in the development and implementation of novel smart AM capabilities for real-time process monitoring and control to enable achieving enhanced process-property-performance. A particular emphasis will be placed on developing these capabilities for large-scale AM technologies such as Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD), Cold Spray AM (CSAM), Laser Metal Deposition (LMD), and Wire-Arc AM (WAAM), along with hybrid (additive + subtractive) operations.
The Postdoctoral scholar will also be required to assist with coordinating meetings with the project sponsors/partners, mentoring and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students in the group, documenting and dissemination of results through presentations, reports as well as conference and journal publications. They will also support the PI and Co-PIs in the preparation of grant proposals for external funding.
Funding will be renewed yearly, contingent upon performance, for up to 2 years. U.S. Citizens or Green Card holders are strongly encouraged to apply.
SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES
- Experience in the development and implementation of AI-based smart solutions for AM including advanced machine learning techniques (experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or Tensorflow will be a plus)
- Experience in working with robotics-incorporated AM systems, in particular robotic WAAM, including robotic path planning (experience with ABB robots will be a plus)
- Knowledge and experience with large-scale metal AM technologies will be an advantage
- Ability to work effectively in a large multidisciplinary team
