The Franca Lab, a dynamic team within the Division of Biomaterials and Biomedical Sciences at the School of Dentistry, affiliated with the Knight Cancer Precision Biofabrication Hub, is seeking a motivated and skilled post-doctoral scholar to join our team.
At the Franca Lab, we study the interactions between early-stage head and neck cancers, the extracellular matrix, vasculature, and the immune system using 3D cell culture, microfluidic devices, and tissue engineering techniques.
Function/Duties of Position:
We are seeking a post-doctoral researcher with a solid track record of publications and hands-on experience in microfluidics, organs-on-a-chip, cell culture, and cancer biology. The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biology, Dentistry, or a related field, with the ability to manage multiple projects and independently plan, execute, and analyze experiments. Expertise in computational biology and the analysis of gene datasets is a plus.
You will have the opportunity to work closely with the principal investigator, co-supervise graduate students, and collaborate with the research team at the Knight Cancer Precision Biofabrication Hub. Additionally, you will receive close mentoring to support your career development, with opportunities for networking, skill-building, and guidance in pursuing future academic or industry positions.
Required Qualifications:
- PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Biomaterials, Biology, Dentistry or related field
- Laboratory experience with tissue engineering, organs on a chip, or cancer biology
- Excellent critical thinking, problem solving abilities, oral and written communication skills, teamwork, and time management skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment
- Able to conduct research in a multidisciplinary, fast paced research environment, occasionally with tight deadlines
- Able to work independently, conducting biological and engineering related experiments with cells, biomaterial and microfluidic devices
- Able to stand at a lab bench, sit at a microscope, perform laboratory manipulations, move and carry light lab equipment, perform image analysis experiments, operate computers and related software, communicate easily with co-workers and support staff, assist and instruct other lab members with scientific methods
Preferred Qualifications:
- PhD thesis on tissue engineering, and previous experience with primary cancer cells or organoids
- Experience with advanced imaging techniques or gene analysis, primary cancer cell culture, organoids, electron and fluorescence microscopy, cell transfection, live cell imaging, ELISA, PCR
- Previous experience with editing grants and mentoring is a plus
