Description:

POWER SYSTEMS ENGINEER – GRID ANALYSIS

Role Title: Grid Analysis – Electrical Engineer
Experience: 3-5 years in Power Systems and Grid Studies
Location: Remote

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Electrical engineers involved in these studies need a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles and specialised skills in software tools like PSCAD or PSSE and DIgSILENT . Here are the key technical skills required:

SPECIALISED SKILLS FOR GRID CONNECTION STUDIES:

  • Power system modelling: Ability to model various power system components (generators, wind turbines, solar PV, loads, etc.) accurately in PSCAD and DIgSILENT.
  • Harmonic analysis: Understanding of harmonic generation, aggregation, and mitigation techniques. Proficiency in DIgSILENT for harmonic studies, including harmonic distortion calculations and filter design.
  • Transient analysis: Knowledge of transient phenomena (e.g., short circuits, switching transients, lightning strikes) and their impact on power systems. Ability to perform transient simulations in PSCAD and DIgSILENT to assess system stability and protection coordination.
  • Fault ride-through: Understanding of fault ride-through requirements for grid-connected renewable energy sources. Ability to simulate fault scenarios and assess the ability of renewable energy systems to remain connected during faults.
  • RMS dynamic studies: Knowledge of RMS dynamic models for synchronous generators, induction generators, and power electronic converters. Ability to perform RMS dynamic simulations to assess system stability and control performance.
  • Software proficiency: Expertise in using PSCAD and DIgSILENT for power system modelling, simulation, and analysis. Familiarity with other relevant software tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python) for data processing and analysis.
  • Grid code: Experience with grid code requirements for transmission and distribution system operators in EMEA and nordic countries.
By possessing these technical skills, electrical engineers can effectively conduct grid connection studies and ensure the successful integration of renewable energy into the electrical grid.

Relevant educational background such as:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  • Master’s degree in Power Systems, Renewable Energy, or Electrical Engineering is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Certifications such as PSCAD Certification, DIgSILENT PowerFactory Certification, Certified Energy Manager (CEM) can be an additional advantage.

Responsibilities:

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

This role focuses on conducting advanced power system studies and simulations to facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources and large consumer facilities into the grid. The engineer will utilise software tools like PSCAD and DIgSILENT for power system modelling, harmonic analysis, and transient studies, while ensuring compliance with electrical safety standards. Collaborating with international project teams, this position aims to enhance grid reliability and performance, driving innovation in sustainable energy solutions while leveraging remote work flexibility.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform detailed power system analyses, including short circuit studies, harmonic analysis, transient simulations, and power quality assessments.
  • Stay updated with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in power systems and grid analysis to drive innovation and improve processes.
  • Work closely with and interpret client requirements and translate into deliverables.
  • Provide actionable insights and recommendations based on analysis results to enhance system reliability, performance, and safety.
  • Facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources (e.g., solar, wind) into the electrical grid by conducting grid connection studies and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing within the team, fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
