  • Thorough understanding of different generation technology types including Thermal, Hydro, Wind, Solar, Storage and Interconnectors.
  • Thorough understanding on modelling (steady state, dynamic and EMT analysis).
  • Experience of developing, building and maintaining appraisal and mathematical models.
  • Experience of data handling and information analysis, in order to model scenarios.
  • Prior experience or general understanding of working with probabilistic models.
  • Ability to understand and draw out model requirements from industry forums and focus groups.
  • Project management experience and stakeholder engagement skills an advantage.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills – ability to write concise technical reports for a range of internal and external audiences.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • To provide input to restoration strategies and report on the impact and benefit of differing strategies.
  • To support the liaison with DESNZ and Ofgem and other industry forums on modelling developments and to drive agreement for variables utilised.
  • Support the contracting of new providers including providing technical advice on service requirements, the use of variety of generation technologies for restoration and network connection/liaison.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of the ESO probabilistic capability for Restoration via @risk software (or equivalent) – including stakeholder engagement.
  • To extend the modelling capacity to include horizon scan for potential generation changes, and to advise how these may be handled.
  • To provide a technical assessment ability to compliment the commercial assessment of new providers.
  • To report on model development, process and results in a clear and methodical fashion.
  • To produce technical analysis reports on model outcomes, in line with the project plan deliverables.
  • To set standards, policies and procedures around information management and governance for the model – with input from Industry and maintain appropriate documentation.
  • Whilst being the Subject Matter Expert on probabilistic modelling, lead and deliver training to other team members so that they can utilise the model autonomously.
  • Contribute to the implementation of the Electricity System Restoration Standard.
  • Represent the ESO at external groups such as Electricity Task Group and DNO Forums and be an ambassador for the ESO and National Grid.
  • Ensure that the GB Transmission System infrastructure and procedures are adequate and sufficiently resilient to support the re-starting of the GB transmission system in the event of a major failure.

As a Restoration Engineer you will be providing assurance of the ESO’s Electricity System Restoration (ESR) capability and creating the strategic direction for system restoration following a partial or total shutdown. You will also be liaising with multiple parties across the industry to develop and validate restoration strategies and plans to be enacted at times of extreme system distress.
