Description:
Endoscopy is a rapidly evolving specialty with more complex and high-risk procedures being performed regularly. The workforce needs to be trained and educated to be confident and competent to assist during these procedures and to provide high quality care for patients throughout their journey.
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced Registered Nurse to lead and be actively involved in to arrange and deliver departmental education programmes in line with the South West Endoscopy Training Academy and JETS Workforce strategies. T ailored endoscopy specific education and training is needed to improve recruitment, and the retention of competent and confident highly skilled staff
To take the strategic lead for the training and education of nursing staff, of all grades in Endoscopy
- To work alongside the Matron, the Band 7 Endoscopy Unit Managers and wider team to determine and deliver on service strategic objectives
- To encourage interdisciplinary working and education to meet the needs of acutely unwell patient.
- To maintain visibility within the clinical area, role modelling high standards of care, evidence-based practice and effective leadership
- To facilitate the recruitment of nurses through effective processes and the provision of a robust plan of clinical supervision and education tailored to individual needs where appropriate.
- To facilitate staff retention by focusing and promoting clinical support, job satisfaction and opportunities for staff personal and professional development
- To manage & maintain training records and ensure fairness and transparency of training resource allocation. Ensure that nursing competencies are recorded on the JETS website.
- Undertake JETs workforce courses and faculty training

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required
- Qualified Nurse with current registration status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and able to meet the revalidation requirements.
- To have knowledge and understanding of full range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures to be able to act as a resource and support the nursing team to provide high quality, evidence-based care.
- Has substantial knowledge and experience in Endoscopy to be able to assist with the co-ordination of staff training to ensure a high professional standard in all aspects of patient care.
- To have substantial knowledge and experience to act as a resource within the speciality to provide the nursing team with professional development and education in consultation with the Band 7 Senior Sister and Matron.
- To work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
- Substantial acute nursing experience in a hospital setting
- Recognised Nursing Degree or equivalent including a Recognised Teaching Qualification
- Excellent organisational, line management, interpersonal and leadership skills.
- A willingness to develop knowledge and skill is essential
- Demonstrate proven change management skills.
- An ability to perform clinical skills with dexterity
- Substantial knowledge of clinical governance, policy and procedure
- An understanding of evidence-based practice and nursing research
- Appropriate IT skills which can be built upon to incorporate the use of hospital administration, information and training systems
- Organisation and time management skills
- Demonstrate a clear understanding of Safeguarding policies and procedures.

Clinical Practice
As a Registered Nurse the expectation is that, with adequate training, supervision and assessment, you will be able to;
- Ensure clinical practice is evidence based or peer reviewed “best practice”
- Develop, maintain and teach CPD and JAG training courses including clinical skills and knowledge necessary to deliver evidence-based service.
- Developing priority areas for support with the Senior Sister and Matron.
- Assist the Senior Sister with the development of staff through assisting the on-going development, supervision and monitoring of nurses, ensuring their role provision meets service needs
- Working alongside the Ward Manager, develop and maintain a local Training Needs Analysis, coordinate the links with appraisals and National Guidance , ensuring that CPD activity meets individual needs, service provision and within budgetary limits.
- Support Endoscopy nurses through revalidation process
- Be competent in the use of all relevant Trust IT systems including the use of electronic patient record, email, and Trak-Care
- Maintain regular use of emails to keep abreast of information disseminated in the Trust
- Adhere to the NMC code of practice at all times and operate within the NMC standards of proficiency for Registered Nurses
- Contribute to the development of policies, protocols and guidelines, including those which will impact outside area of practice.
- To assist the Matron and Senior Sister with the ongoing training and development of staff within Endoscopy.
- To act as a resource and support nursing teams in the care delivery of patients in Endoscopy
- Responsible for assisting with the on-going development, supervision and monitoring of nurses, undertaking specialist training programmes as required and ensuring their role provision meets service needs
- Recording and reporting to the Senior Sister the CPD they deliver on a weekly basis.
- To contribute to the development of Endoscopy protocols and guidelines
- Able to work alongside nursing staff, role modelling high standards of practice whilst assessing, delivering and evaluating patient care. Highlighting any areas of development for team members as required.
- Devise individual training plans for staff that are either new in post or requiring specific support or training. Providing feedback to support their development
- To actively monitor and support the health and wellbeing of team members: advising on resources available and escalating for line manager assistance as required and agreed by the individual staff member
- Responsible for the administration of clinical procedures/treatments within the specialist area, acting as an expert resource for the nursing team.
- To effectively input and retrieve patient and staff information from computer-based systems, specifically Medilogik (Endoscopy Management System) and other specialist systems and be able to advise and support other team members in their use.
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records
- To deliver safe care within a challenging and changing clinical environment, using equipment and resources safely and as appropriate.
- Participate in audits, and undertake local research relevant to area of practice.

Leadership and management
- Comply with Trust and Departmental policies and procedures e.g. Health and Safety at Work Act (1974), Manual Handling, clinical equipment competency, risk management, Data Protection Acts and patient confidentiality at all times. This will include demonstrating compliance with the terms of all safeguarding policies and processes relevant to the safeguarding of adults and children in the care of GHNHSFT and to undergo regular mandatory training concerned with safeguarding matters.
- Report near misses and untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies, injury or medicine administration errors as detailed in the departmental and Trust protocols. Assist lead staff in investigating incidents as required.
- Maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice, conduct or decision making in conjunction with lead staff.
- Ensure a smart, professional image that enhances the public perception of the Trust and the professionalism of its staff is portrayed.
