Position Purpose
The Pre-College Seasonal Reader will review and make admission decisions on applications submitted by students applying to Brown Pre-College Programs. All reading and reviews are web-based and completed remotely on a flexible schedule. The Seasonal Reader is expected to commit 15-20 hours per week between early January and late May. The Reader is expected to meet established review goals, which may vary by week, but require at least 180 applications read per week.
The Seasonal Reader will need to complete technical training on both divisional Salesforce processes and the TargetX decision module. The same training will also cover criteria used when reviewing Pre-College and Pre-Baccalaureate applications. A loaner laptop will be provided by the Division.
Major Tasks
- Reads Pre-College and Pre-Baccalaureate applications, including transcripts, recommendation letters, English proficiency materials, essays and other provided documents, to determine admissibility and issue decisions for Brown’s Pre-College Programs and Pre-Baccalaureate Program.
- Meets established review number goals, which may vary throughout the cycle based on application volume.
- Uses established admission criteria to admit, request additional material, or send a file to the Second Review Committee.
- Direct outreach to applicants, via systematic processes, to request missing application materials.
- Reviews and synthesizes materials, and provide recommendations for admissions decisions, for applications outside of stated admissions parameters.
- Reviews and discusses applications, makes recommendations, and occasionally makes ultimate decisions on applications as a Second Review Committee member, leveraging both provided materials and professional judgment.
The Pre-College Seasonal Reader is a 5-month position (JAN-MAY) with the expectation that the position will be part-time during that time period and will be scheduled 10-20 hours per week. All reading and review is web based and completed remotely on a flexible schedule. This is a seasonal/intermittent position that is not benefits-eligible. The hourly rate for the Pre-College Seasonal Reader is $28/hr.
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 3-5 years admissions experience required.
- Familiarity with secondary school transcripts, secondary school curricula, and grading systems for both international and domestic systems required.
- Strong reading and analytical abilities.
- Knowledge of both Brown University and Brown’s Pre-College Programs is preferred.
- Well-developed computer skills and analytical abilities are essential.
- Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
