The Pre-Operative Assessment Service at NUH has an opportunity to support a secondment for 12 months covering maternity leave. We seek a dedicated, hardworking, enthusiastic, caring, and highly motivated individual. The service and Leadership team are committed to providing continuous learning and development opportunities to support ongoing CPD and career progression in this nurse led automatous service.
The nurse-led department is supported by consultant anaesthetists and has a strong clinically creditable leadership team who offer pre-operative assessments for adult patients undergoing surgeries under general anaesthetic or regional block across various specialties.
The role offers the successful candidate the opportunity to develop consultation skills, clinical examination abilities in heart and lungs and patient management.
To succeed in this position, you should be a highly motivated individual with excellent communication skills. Tailored support will be given to the successful candidate to fulfil the role of a pre-operative assessment nurse/ OPD.
The service is cross- site located at two NUH sites: Edward Unit at City Hospital and B50 at QMC. There is an expectation you are able to work at either campus as part of the role.

To undertake pre-operative assessment of patients from a range of surgical specialties in a nurse led clinic environment.
Preform protocol based examination and assessment of patients. Initiate and follow through investigations and referrals to other health care professionals according to agreed protocols.
Commence necessary planning for perioperative care and ensure timely discharge.
Maintain close liaison with staff concerned with planning and scheduling patient admissions.
To work independently; autonomously and without direct supervision after completing recognised competencies.
Regularly take charge of the clinical area in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility or his/her deputy.
Utilises and integrates evidence into practice. The post holder is required to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
We run a Monday to Friday, 8-6 service and are closed on weekends and bank holidays. You will be required to work flexibly across both sites. Interested candidates would be welcome to have an initial visit and informal discussion. We look forward to hearing from you.

Be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development of programmes of care ensuring that these are evaluated and amended as appropriate.
Document the condition and progress of patients and report to medical staff and/or senior nursing staff any areas of concern. following the assessment.
Undertake nursing procedures and techniques in accordance with agreed policies and guidelines.
Demonstrate clinical procedures to registered and unregistered staff as required. Once competent in team management skills, takes charge of the clinical area on a regular basis in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility or his/her deputy.
Participate in the support and implementation of Essence of Care guidelines, nursing metric results and patient feedback.
Be aware of your role with regard to the Medicines Code of Practice.
Comply with all Trust policies and risk assessments with particular regard to the policies and procedures carried out in the event of maintaining staff and patient safety.
Liaise with other clinical areas providing appropriate policies, education and clinical expertise in order to facilitate the management of patients with special requirements.
Maintain an awareness of the developments in the care and treatment of patients in order to be able to carry out duties competently and efficiently.
Plan, develop and implement approaches to promote health and wellbeing of patients and improve their health status.
Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team in order to promote efficient patient care and maintain effective channels of communication.
Report all accidents and untoward incidents to the nurse in charge of the area and Complete an incident form in accordance with Trust policy.
Maintain complete and accurate patient records ensuring that they provide a detailed account of all care provided throughout the patients stay.
Communicate with and provide support for patients’ relatives, carers and visitors.
Be aware of the need for confidentiality both within the written and spoken word and ensure correct storage of patients’ records at all times, to comply with the Information
Additional responsibilities of the role include learning and taking patient’s medical history, phlebotomy skills, ECGs and direct patient care.
