JOB SUMMARY
At the forefront of transforming Great Britain’s energy systems, Ofgem is tackling one of the most pressing challenges of our time: delivering a secure and sustainable transition to Net Zero. We’re looking for two Principal Analysts (Hydrogen) to join us and lead groundbreaking initiatives that will shape the future of the hydrogen economy in Great Britain.
Ofgem is Great Britain’s independent energy regulator. We’re at the forefront of change across the energy sector, driving toward Net Zero whilst protecting energy consumers - especially vulnerable people.
We’re offering 1-year fixed-term contracts with a competitive salary, opportunities to lead key workstreams, and the chance to influence the development of one of the UK’s most exciting emerging industries. You’ll be central to designing and delivering the analytical foundations and frameworks that will guide the economic regulation of hydrogen systems, a vital component of the UK’s Net Zero ambitions.
In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to lead critical analysis and provide expert insight into hydrogen systems, while collaborating closely with senior policymakers, economists, and industry experts. As part of a supportive and innovative team, you’ll work on solutions that balance affordability, innovation, and sustainability for energy consumers across the country.
We’re looking for someone with extensive expertise in financial or economic impact assessment and data analysis, combined with excellent communication and problem-solving skills. You’ll thrive in a fast-paced environment, capable of navigating complex challenges, influencing key stakeholders, and inspiring others through your leadership and technical expertise.
At Ofgem, you’ll join a collaborative and forward-thinking organisation committed to professional excellence and inclusivity. We provide flexible working arrangements and the opportunity to engage with groundbreaking projects that have real-world impact, as well as direct access to high-level decision-making processes.
We have a critical purpose to develop robust regulatory frameworks for hydrogen systems that ensure long-term sustainability, security, and value for energy consumers. Join us to make a lasting impact on the future of energy in the UK.
JOB DESCRIPTION
These roles sit within the Energy Systems Management and Security (ESMS) Directorate which is responsible for, amongst other things, the regulatory oversight of all gas systems in GB, and assisting our portfolio department, the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), to establish the economic, regulatory and market arrangements necessary to support and regulate a robust and future-proof Hydrogen System.
In the coming years, we will be leading an ambitious programme of work, focused on managing critical risks within existing gas systems to maintaining security of supply and protecting the consumer interest, whilst transitioning and decarbonising those same systems as GB moves further toward net zero. This programme of work will also heavily focus on the development of new Hydrogen Systems as one of a handful of new, low carbon solutions that will be critical for the UK’s future energy security and its transition to net zero. As a Hydrogen Systems Principal Analyst within ESMS you will be at the heart of this ambitious programme and your expertise, commitment to delivery, thought leadership and passion for developing others will be critical to our success.
This recruitment round is being used to fill Hydrogen vacancies within the ESMS Directorate. Current vacancies sit in either the Gas System and Operations (GSO) Team or the Gas Security and Flexibility (GSF) Team (both within the ESMS Directorate). This is a great opportunity to join two fast-growing and highly visible teams responsible for delivering a range of critical policy and analysis products integral to the delivery of Ofgem’s principal objective, and the delivery of Government’s net zero ambitions.
These roles will support the government’s multi-year programme to design and implement business models and a market/regulatory framework to kick-start the hydrogen economy in Great Britain. Funding arrangements for these roles are currently secured for one year.
