Description:
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a project team responsible for developing and delivering engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed engineering design for Electricity Transmission and Distribution Projects (33 kV and above). This will include but not limited to Structure Foundations, Conductors and Conductor Systems, Structural Design both concept and detailed design.

QUALIFICATIONS
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related engineering discipline, such as Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. A-level or equivalent in Maths.
- Aspirations for or working towards membership of a relevant professional body, such as MICE, MIStructE, MIET
EXPERIENCE
- Ideally, competent in the use of industry software such as PLS CADD, PLS Tower, SAPS or other similar packages. Working knowledge of relevant national and industry standards such as BS EN 50341, the ENATS suite and client specific. Typically, 2 years minimum post-graduate industry experience.
- Ideally, 3 – 5 years’ experience with National Grid OHL projects, or 5 – 10 years’ general OHL industry experience in the UK.
Responsibilities:
- Undertake and be responsible for the design and specification of steel overhead line structures and overhead line design systems.
- Take responsibility for project management and ensure the achievement of all deliverables in a timely manner, including financial management and attending site meetings where appropriate.
- Lead the Project Design Team and provide engineering design support to the development team during NDP4.2 (Select Option) and 4.3 (Develop and Sanction), including advice, where necessary, regarding the need for other specialist resources.
- Co-ordinate the FEED process and ensuring co-operation, communication and co-ordination between designers is occurring.
- Ensuring a Design Programme is prepared, maintained & implemented.
- Take responsibility for all Health and Safety and CDM issues arising on projects and take a lead role in the development of OHL designs and ensure compliance with legislation.
- Provide technical expertise to the company, reviewing and development of company systems and provision of technical training as appropriate including the mentoring of Junior Engineers.
- Monitor and undertake day-to-day management of all design activities, verification of all work undertaken by your design teams and ensuring compliance with company Quality Procedures.
- Provide site supervision to others and to verify and approved proposed work procedures, designs, drawings, and method statements prior to work commencing.
- Provide guidance and training as appropriate including the mentoring of design team(s).
- Responsible for the development of preliminary and detailed design and delivery of projects by leading the technical aspects of overhead lines and all other associated equipment including Foundation, Conductors, Conductor Systems, Structural Design, both concept and detailed design.
- Analyse client’s specifications and agree design requirements.
- Design safe systems, defined as the integrated structure/ overhead line, so that they may be supplied and constructed in accordance with customer requirements and/ or current practices. Analyse and resolve design issues.
- Provide calculations and /or reports to justify design results.
- Liaise where necessary with clients to ensure satisfactory progress and quality.
- Take responsibility for the delivery of a portfolio of Structural OHL projects, ensuring adherence to quality, time, and budget, as well as relevant standards and client specifications, including:
- Preparation of schedule of activities, scheme budgets, scheme fees, target costs, and project programmes
- Consult with Line Manager/ Accounts Department for payment applications to be submitted to clients.
- Accept ownership of work to be done (i.e. being required to undertake specific actions within an agreed job boundary, the execution of a delegated task, activity, or process):
- Managing the work undertaken by design teams under your immediate direction and control.
- Coordinate submission of design drawings to approving authorities and ensure successful acceptance. All to be conducted and recorded in accordance with LSTC QA procedures.
- Keeping all records, supporting documentation necessary to substantiate personal performance.
- Ensure all designs are completed accurately and the design office is working to the latest specifications and ensure adherence of all members of the design office to LSTC design procedures and processes.
- Submit monthly progress reports to the Line Manager.
- Co-ordinate and liaise with all other departments, disciplines, external agencies, and authorities to ensure all design work is in accordance with the clients agreed brief, programme.
- Ensure design reviews take place and that work is completed in accordance with the delivery programme.
- Preparation of tender costs and advising on timescales/lead times
- Preparation of work instructions and evaluation and collation of information and preparation of work packs
- Responsible for the delivery of Conceptual and Detailed Design solutions
- Liaise where necessary with LSTC Engineers and Clients to ensure satisfactory progress and quality.
- Writing Project Report as required
- Monitoring project hours and costs against budgets
- Ensure all drawings are completed accurately to the latest specifications as applicable.
- Support and contribute to LSTC databases, knowledge pools and resource libraries as appropriate.
- Carry out reasonable duties as directed by Line Manager or Nominated Director.
- People Management/Staff Development:
- With other managers monitor and evaluate progress of others to build a high-performing team in which each member has a clear understanding of their responsibilities and report to Line Manager any issues arising from your evaluations
- In consultation with Line Manager mentor all staff on your knowledge of overhead line systems, construction techniques and design software
- Conduct from time-to-time staff reviews, completing necessary documentation and returning to Line Manager
- Monitor and evaluate progress of others to build a high-performing team in which each member has a clear understanding of their responsibilities and report to the Line Manager any issues arising from your evaluations.
- Deputise as/Lead the weekly/monthly Team meetings.
- Systems/Process Development:
- Responsible for developing design processes and OHL training manuals/modules.
- Provide PLS CADD and PLS Tower training and review models.
- Ensuring that a robust QA system of PLS checking and approval is being maintained.
- Monitor current systems and liaise with the QA Manager to recommend any changes to enhance quality or efficiency.
- Quality Systems and Health & Safety
- Production of all CDM documentation and may in the future act as Principal Designer when appointed by Client.
- Provide to Line Manager, reports to demonstrate all work completed complies with the client’s brief.
- Ensure all QA environmental and Safety Documentation is prepared and issued in accordance with company procedures.
- Prepare and maintain documentation to comply with all company procedures and health and safety legislation.
- Liaise with the QA team on any issues arising with regards to standards, supplier’s literature, technical catalogues, client documentation, purchase order lists, and sub-contractor services.
- In addition to undertaking design and design management duties on OHL projects you may also be required to work on, or coordinate other aspects of the projects, such as constructability, access, civil, geotechnical, rail, survey etc. Any such work is to be agreed with Line Manager.
