Our mission is simple: to save lives at sea. Since the 19th century, our crews have risked their lives to rescue those in danger of drowning. We are seeking a Principal Naval Architect to join our Engineering team, responsible for the design, stability, and safety of all RNLI floating assets.

Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership: Guide and motivate the Naval Architecture team, setting clear goals and fostering innovation.
  • Talent Management: Oversee hiring, training, and development to build a skilled, resilient team.
  • Design Authority: Act as the primary Design Authority for Naval Architecture, ensuring adherence to design standards throughout an asset’s life cycle. Serve as an engineering signatory, providing oversight and approval as needed.
  • Design & Development: Manage technical documentation and configuration control to support asset development and maintenance.
  • Compliance & Standards: Ensure designs comply with EAM Processes and Standards.
  • Budget Management: Oversee team budgets, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Project Collaboration: Collaborate with project teams to ensure timely, high-quality project delivery.
  • Technical Support: Provide expert technical support to coastal staff and volunteers.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Work with boatyards, contractors, and suppliers to ensure project success.
  • Technical Investigations: Conduct investigations, trials, and analysis to resolve technical issues.
  • Industry Engagement: Engage with industry and academia to enhance engineering practices.
  • Strategic Development: Develop and implement the engineering strategy for Naval Architecture.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate risks to ensure safety and reliability.
  • Innovation Promotion: Encourage innovation and the adoption of new technologies and ideas.
