    The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill several Principal Program Management Officer roles in the Census Program Management Office (Census PMO).

Responsibilities:

The Census PMO plays an important role in helping to coordinate and manage the 2026 Census Program. The purpose of the Census PMO is to set, maintain and enforce the practices, policies and standards for structuring and executing projects within the Census Program.
The 2026 Census of Population and Housing (the Census) will be Australia’s 19th national Census. The Census is a large and complex exercise, with the planning, development, testing and delivery spanning over seven years.

As a Principal Program Management Officer, your responsibilities may include:

  • developing and contributing expert knowledge of the program to provide advice, options, submissions and briefing materials
  • providing expert insight and guidance on the use of project management methods, project management tools and project management software (e.g. Microsoft Project or Jira)
  • coordinating and reporting on project activities for internal reporting and program governance
  • supporting decision making through secretariat support
  • coordinating and reporting on program assurance activities
  • conducting risk, benefits and/or issue management activities, maintaining adequate contingencies for future occurrences and seeking new opportunities to create value
  • incorporating project schedules into a program summary level and overseeing projects dependencies and interdependencies
  • engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and build mutual relationships to focus on maximising the long-term value of the Census program
  • supporting Census projects with management plans, closure reports, change controls and reporting commitment
  • managing the Program Library e.g. Project Management Plans (PMPs), Dossier, Closure.
