Description:

As our Principal Project Officer, you will play a leading role in the delivery of enhanced data management services and system improvements which support invasive species management in Queensland. With Queensland being affected by more biosecurity incursions than any other Australian state or territory, your efforts will be integral in helping the government and our stakeholder prevent, respond to, and recover from biosecurity concerns that threaten our environment, economy, and way of life.

Responsibilities:

  • are leading work with operational, technical, policy and data management specialist within Biosecurity Queensland and the broader Department of Agriculture and Fisheries to develop a clear plan for information management system improvements, including enhanced GIS capability.- manage delivery of a work program and ensure assigned tasks meet the project timelines.- effectively negotiate the completion of key activities within your team, and with other business areas to ensure project success.- celebrate your successes through the achievement of project milestones and delivery of reports.- are actively contributing as a member of a high-performing team.

About the role

  • Demonstrate strong skills and knowledge in scoping, developing, adapting and implementing computer software solutions relating to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Microsoft SharePoint and other applications (e.g. Python, SQL, DBMS, XML and .NET or similar).- Design, develop and improve the collection and management of spatial data from the field to a database. This will involve developing powerful spatial visualisation, analytics and mapping products that align closely with strategic and operational planning outcomes; and are accessible, comprehensive and easy to interpret.- Possess a sound knowledge and experience in working with field data capture, including GPS, smart form design, and design of forms that are easy to use in outdoor environments.- Design and develop a wide range of innovative and easy-to-use mapping and reporting tools, such as real-time dashboards summarising spatial and temporal trends, or detailed textual reports of specific activities, as well as quality assurance tools designed to identify the quality, completeness and accuracy of corporate datasets.- Review, negotiate and manage project outputs ensuring that deliverables meet or clarify stakeholder expectations (e.g. Project Owner, Project Board) and are consistent with the approved project plan and with DAF and whole-of-government policies.- Support the preparation and dissemination of high-quality project documents and reports, under the general direction of the project manager and/or sponsor.- Use recognised project management techniques, methodologies and relevant software as determined by the context and in line with departmental requirements.- Undertake risk and issue identification, assessment and mitigation activities ensuring risks and issues are documented, reviewed and escalated along with recommendations as appropriate.- Demonstrate strong skills in documenting system specifications, and training others in their use.

While formal qualifications are not a requirement of the role, a diploma or degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or similar would be highly regarded.
