We have an opportunity for an enthusiastic and flexible person to work as part of the Local Traffic and Safety Team. Our work touches almost all aspects of county life by providing vital services for residents, businesses, and visitors across East Sussex. By putting people at the heart of what we do, we are investing in the health, environment, education, infrastructure, and economy of our local communities.
The Local Traffic and Safety Team is part of the County Council’s Road Safety Team who are responsible for monitoring and investigating crashes on around 3,000km of roads in the County and putting in place measures to prevent future crashes. The team works closely with organisations like Sussex Police, Highways England and Town and Parish Councils to promote road safety through improved traffic management and the provision of services like School Crossing Patrol as well as training for drivers and cyclists.
We are looking for a Principal Road Safety Engineer, responsible for ensuring the effective prioritisation, development and delivery of traffic management and road safety schemes across East Sussex as well as being our lead Road Safety Auditor.
The Principal Road Safety Engineer oversees our road safety projects from prioritisation, scheme development, implementation and monitoring, ensuring the successful delivery of a range of high profile projects and programmes. They will manage a team of staff in delivering these schemes as well as providing professional road safety technical advice and guidance to a range of stakeholders.
As a strong communicator, you will manage relationships with a range of partners, including community representatives.

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Ideally have a background in either road safety, transport scheme delivery or highways design
  • Be a Team Leader for Road Safety Audits, or working towards Team Leader status
  • Have project management experience
  • Can analyse and interpret complex data/information
  • Are able to oversee the successful delivery of a wide range of programmes and projects
  • Can build strong working relationships with stakeholders;

The post may be predominantly based in any of our offices in Lewes, Bexhill or Heathfield. There is flexibility around start and finish times and the opportunity for a mix of home and office-based working as part of a hybrid working model.

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is part-time or term-time only.
Work Permits: we may be able to obtain a Work Permit for this post but this is subject to meeting the requirements of the UK Border Agency’s Points-based Immigration System.
