Based out of our Southampton office we are working flexibly with balance of onsite/home working.
We are going through an exciting period of change and are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Principal Software Engineer to join our Software Engineering team. You will be a senior individual contributor role who’s remit spans across multiple squads. You’ll be an engineering leader who has a sophisticated understanding of your field to guide teams and shape the creation and evolution of our digital products. This role is within our Store Operations domain where we seek to build an outstanding EPOS system using the latest technologies and software.

  • Delivery: Drives significant technology initiatives end-to-end to ensure customer outcomes are met. Collaborates with architects and our Product function to craft roadmaps and steer the long-range goals.
  • Engineering Excellence: Drives design and implementation of robust and durable software solutions which solve business-critical problems in a fast-paced environment, embedding engineering best practice in collaboration with all Principal Engineers.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Develop a culture of knowledge sharing and provides guidance on how best to achieve across the engineering community.
  • Relationship Management: Builds cohesive and trusted relationships with collaborators within and beyond engineering.
  • Self-Management: Role models how to successfully lead skills and personal development and promotes a culture of continuous learning.
  • Innovation: Drives a culture of responsible innovation and experimentation; providing perspectives on leading industry tools and trends and recommendations on new and emerging technologies.

What you’ll bring:

  • Expert full-stack proficiency with experience working with a range of modern web technologies, languages and frameworks, notably Java, JavaScript, Vue.js, Node.js and automated test frameworks such as Cypress or Selenium and solid understanding of cloud-based solutions, preferably AWS.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, and source control systems.
  • Ability to lead the creation of robust, functional solutions and high-quality code, partnering with numerous stakeholders and you’re able to inspire and empower engineers to consistently deliver value.
  • Experience working with EPOS systems and/or retail payment systems.
  • Advanced knowledge and expert understanding of technical concepts with the ability to apply these pragmatically to business opportunities. Exceptional problem-solving skills at an enterprise scale, with the ability to lead the implementation of sophisticated solutions across an evolving landscape.
  • Exceptional communication skills with high levels of emotional intelligence to influence and inspire others.
  • Adept at identifying and capturing solutions for non-functional requirements for the products and services being delivered.
  • Self-starter mentality and ability to make decisions with high-level of autonomy, empowerment and responsibility.
  • Promotes a self-starter mentality, passion for experimentation and out of the box thinking
