Description:

Duties/Pligte

  • Responsible for the management and maintenance of various undergraduate and postgraduate laboratories, storerooms and preparation areas;
  • Responsible for coordinating the preparation of and support to undergraduate practicals with an emphasis on instrumental techniques and synthetic techniques;
  • Providing technical research support to academic staff and postgraduate students;
  • Responsible for maintaining the laboratory equipment;
  • Managing support staff assigned to the hub;
  • Controlling and managing stock storerooms (chemicals, gas and glassware);
  • Coordinating health and safety measures within the hub and reporting risks;
  • Liaising with service providers for obtaining quotations and purchasing chemicals and laboratory equipment;
  • Liaising with the University’s service departments.

Verantwoordelik vir die bestuur en instandhouding van verskeie voor- en nagraadse laboratoria, stoorkamers en voorbereidingsruimtes;

  • Verantwoordelik vir die koördinering van voorbereiding van en ondersteuning aan voorgraadse praktika met die klem op instrumentele tegnieke, sowel as sintese-tegnieke;
  • Bied tegniese navorsingsondersteuning aan akademiese personeel en nagraadse studente;
  • Verantwoordelik vir die instandhouding van laboratoriumtoerusting;
  • Bestuur die steunpersoneel wat aan die hub toegewys is;
  • Beheer en bestuur voorraadstore (chemikalieë, gas en glasware);
  • Koördineer gesondheids- en veiligheidsmaatreëls in die hub en rapporteer risiko’s;
  • Skakel met diensverskaffers vir die verkrying van kwotasies en die aankoop van chemikalieë en laboratoriumtoerusting;
  • Skakel met die Universiteit se diensdepartemente.

Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes

  • A BSc-Honours degree in chemistry, or an equivalent technical qualification with appropriate work experience;
  • Good working knowledge of a variety of analytical equipment;
  • At least five years’ practical work experience in a comparable laboratory environment;
  • Experience of managing laboratory infrastructure;
  • Proven computer skills in the use of the Microsoft Office package (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook);
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
  • Evidence of effective management of staff and the ability to work as part of a team.

’n Honneurs-BSc-graad in chemie, of ’n gelykwaardige tegniese kwalifikasie met gepaste werkservaring;

  • Goeie werkskennis van ’n verskeidenheid analitiese toerusting;
  • Minstens vyf jaar se praktiese werkservaring in ’n vergelykbare laboratoriumomgewing;
  • Ervaring met die bestuur van laboratoriuminfrastruktuur;
  • Bewese rekenaarvaardigheid in die gebruik van die Microsoft Office-pakket (Word, Excel, PowerPoint en Outlook);
  • Uitstekende mondelinge en skriftelike kommunikasievaardighede in Engels;
  • Bewese, effektiewe bestuur van personeel en die vermoë om as deel van ’n span te funksioneer.

Recommendation/Aanbeveling

  • A MSc in chemistry;
  • In-depth knowledge of and work experience in advanced instrumental techniques;
  • Good communication skills in Afrikaans.
