Description:
- Patient/Client Care 1.1. Provides scientific support to Diagnostic Radiology including: a. Leading the sections work in optimisation of medical exposures b.
Undertaking quality assurance tests c. Advising on the procurement radiological imaging equipment d. Participating in patient dosimetry programmes including coordinating the routine patient dosimetry programme. e.
Assisting in radiation and patient safety activities to support these imaging modalities 1.2. Calculate information regarding radiation exposure to staff, patients, and if appropriate their carers. In particular assess the risks arising from ionising radiation and put these into a context that can be understood by patients or carers to provide reassurance. 1.3.
Perform risk assessments to ensure that radiation doses received by staff, patients and members of the public are as low as reasonably practicable. 1.4. Perform or support with the performance of regulatory compliance audits 1.5. Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of own specialist area.
1.6. Maintain continuing professional development to standards defined by the relevant professional and regulatory bodies. 1.7. Maintain registration as a Clinical Scientist. - Policy & Service Development 2.1. Participate in maintaining the scientific and technical quality of the Radiation Physics service. 2.2.
Participate in reviewing and developing procedures to ensure the continuing evidence base of the service. 2.3. Keep abreast of the latest technical and scientific developments in own specialist area and their applications in medical and associated fields. Attend suitable seminars and courses for the purpose of service and personal development.
Report the knowledge acquired to colleagues and recommend development of service policies and procedures as appropriate. 2.4. Contribute to the maintenance of statistical information as required for audit, clinical governance and management purposes. 3.
Physical & Financial Resources 3.1. Participate in the delivery of quality assurance programmes ensuring that all appropriate quality control is performed. Assist with determining the appropriate form and frequency of the tests required for each piece of equipment to ensure that accurate images and results are obtained to give the correct diagnosis. Implement changes to the program to take into account new or modified equipment, practice, guidelines or legislation.
3.2. Participate in acceptance testing of new equipment to ensure that it meets its specification and is safe to use with patients. 4. Human Resources 4.1.
Provide tutorials and supervise trainee clinical scientists and clinical technologists on placements in the section. 4.2. Participate in the provision of training of medical physics staff and other groups of healthcare professionals within the Trust and other organisations. 4.3.
Prioritise and manage own workload. 5. Research & Development 5.1. Initiate and participate in research and development both within the department and academic departments as agreed with the Head of Section.
5.2. Provide medical physics expert support the throughput of clincal trials using x-ray or involving radiation exposures at NUH where required. 5.3. Analyse and interpret the results from R & D studies for presentation at scientific meetings and publication in peer review journals.
5.4. Identify possible service developments and new areas of work so as to maximise the benefit of our service to patients and other customers
