Description:
Job Purpose:
Reporting to the Global Head of Privacy in the Legal and Professional Advisory team, the Privacy Counsel is primarily responsible for supporting European privacy matters and local matters globally, including the development and maintenance of strategic compliance and governance activities.
You will be expected to keep abreast of key developments in privacy law, regulation, technology, and best practices, including AI, especially in Europe but not exclusively. You will provide direction and day-to-day advice in alignment with RWS’s global privacy programme across all RWS markets for RWS business activities to your stakeholders.
This includes supporting and expanding RWS’s global approach to privacy and risk management. You will work closely and collaboratively with other members of the Legal Department and stakeholders across RWS business functions. You will actively support RWS’s client-facing lines of business, including our Data Services activities, as a privacy subject matter expert.
In addition, the role will support key growth areas such as AI-related projects as part of privacy by design and impact assessment activities and implementation.
This role requires a strong blend of legal expertise in privacy, programme development and management experience, and contract negotiation skills, including a strong interest and demonstrated experience in AI-related legal matters.
This role also requires hands-on operational experience and expertise, together with demonstrable knowledge of working with privacy management tools (e.g., OneTrust) and industry standards (e.g., ISO, NIST, HiTrust).
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Qualification as a UK solicitor or of EU member state equivalent
- 7-10 years of professional experience with one or more of a law firm, in-house legal department with multinational experience with a focus on privacy law and technology laws
- Experience and familiarity with AI or demonstrated interest in AI laws and regulations including EU AI Act
- Excellent written and oral communications skills in English
- Ability to translate complex laws and regulations into actionable advice
- Excellent organizational skills including the ability to handle high volume of work independently, efficiently, recognize priorities, mange time effectively and meet deadlines
- Inspiring team player who collaborates effectively within cross-functional and fast-paced team environment and proactively builds collective knowledge and capabilities
- Pragmatic problem solver who skillfully navigates situations and offers solution-oriented thought partnership
- Detail-oriented and adept at legal research
- Passionate about understanding the tech world from a privacy standpoint
- Have excellent negotiation, drafting, analytical and communication skills
- Have some commercial and transactional experience
- Proven track record of experience managing privacy and risk management programmes in complex environments, interfacing between different functions
- in the tech sector
- Working knowledge of key privacy regulations (eg GDPR, UK DPA, CCPA/CPRA, HIPAA, China PIPL, Brazil LPD etc) and key industry frameworks eg (ISO, NIST)
- Privacy certifications such as CIPM or CIPT by a recognised professional body highly desirable
- Strong technical background and understanding of technology platforms including Cloud computing
- Working experience with AI/generative AI, machine learning, data analytics
- Ability to translate and present complex concepts and technology solutions into plain language
- Ability to build effective and collaborative working relationships and to influence internal and external stakeholders
- Proactive and driven, with a strong work ethic and integrity
- Proficiency in a second language a plus (French, Italian, Spanish, German)

Responsibilities:
Leading or participating in complex and/or cross-functional privacy and risk management projects at global level
Contributing to guidance in connection with the ongoing maturation of RWS privacy programme
- Conducting and providing advice regarding DPIAs
- Developing privacy guidance in connection with strategic initiatives including risk management
- Supporting creation and review of privacy governance and operational documentation (policies, guidelines, templates and FAQs)
- Reviewing and negotiating contractual arrangements with clients, suppliers, vendors as a resource and escalation point on privacy matters across RWS
- Developing risk management resources
- Support the delivery of programme priorities and objectives against tight deadlines
- Partner and foster a culture of collaboration with relevant business functions for programme operationalisation and proactively manage issues and challenges that may arise
- Support monitoring, tracking and reporting on program performance through defined programme metrics and Key Performance Indicators
- Support establishing programme audit framework and quality assurance in partnership with relevant business teams
- Support programme visibility, communication and education company-wide and among key stakeholders
- Support privacy training and awareness initiatives
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Analyse EU laws and regulations concerning AI and provide legal analysis to stakeholders to contribute to our AI governance
- Monitor and keep team updated on emerging legislative and regulator developments related to AI notably in the EU
