EY Canada is looking for an experienced candidate to help support the growth of our firm. You will join our General Counsel’s Office, a team of sophisticated in-house lawyers who are a respected and integrated part of our professional services firm. You will act as a strategic advisor to our business and help EY’s professionals negotiate complex commercial contracts with some of our most significant clients.
Our highly engaged team is looking to hire a privacy lawyer to support the growth of the firm in this important area. As an integral part of the team, this individual will be directly involved with monitoring evolving privacy laws around the world and assessing their impact on EY Canada. This individual will also be directly responsible for working with our client teams to negotiate client contracts related to privacy, and assist in the training of the engagement teams, other lawyers in the GCO, and key stakeholders.
SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES FOR SUCCESS:
- Knowledge of federal and provincial privacy laws in Canada, GDPR, CCPA and a keen interest in privacy trends in Canada and abroad.
- Certification in privacy disciplines such as CIPP/C, CIPP/E, CIPM, or CIPT recommended.
- Knowledge of project management, knowledge of the services provided by a multidisciplinary professional services firm, knowledge of the French language an asset but not required.
Responsibilities:
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support EY as a key legal advisor on our strategic client engagements of varying sizes and complexity, including master services agreements, data processing agreements, security and privacy schedules, software and SaaS licensing, and other transformational initiatives.
- Provide strategic advice on legal issues related to various data protection laws and regulations and EY policies and processes, emerging privacy trends and their related implications to the business.
- Support EY business lines to draft, review, and negotiate a broad range of commercial agreements and related documents, including master services agreements, statements of work, licensing agreements and other complex commercial arrangements.
- Analyze complex issues, problem solve and provide practical, business-oriented solutions.
- Provide legal expertise on special projects and legal matters, particularly related to data governance, privacy, and information security.
- You will be required to provide appropriate and effective solutions and to consistently provide high-quality risk-appropriate advice to professionals.
- Collaborate with our EY Canada Privacy Office, EY Global functions, other EY member firms, and local stakeholders with respect to the implementation of global policies, processes, and tools within Canada. Manage other special projects on an as needed basis.
- Support specialty practice areas in their compliance with specific data requirements.
TO QUALIFY FOR THE ROLE YOU MUST HAVE:
- J.D. from a recognized law school and member in good standing of a law society in any Canadian Province.
- A minimum of 5 years of post-call privacy and data protection related experience gained at a leading law firm and/or in-house at a sophisticated organization.
- Strong analytical skills and common-sense approach utilized to provide practical, strategic advice.
- Strong negotiation skills that advance business objectives while fostering and maintaining positive relationships internally and externally.
- Superior writing, drafting and communication skills.
