QUALIFICATIONS

Correctional Service Worker 1: Two-year diploma in a related field plus two years related experience; or equivalent as described.

• A related one year certificate and three years of related experience.
• Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of one year of education for one year of experience; or one year of experience for one year of education.

Correctional Service Worker 2: University graduation in a related field plus 2 years related experience; or equivalent as described below.

• Two year diploma in a related field plus 4 years related experience; OR
• Completion of the in-service Criminal Justice Certificate plus 5 years related experience (applicable only to employees who have completed the certificate prior to it being discontinued on December 31, 2017).

Related diplomas or degrees including but not limited to the following fields will be considered:

• Sociology
• Psychology
• Social Work
• Youth Work
• Correctional Services
• Justice Studies
• Applied Justice
• Criminology

Assets will be considered as follows:

• Experience working in Community corrections or providing case management with vulnerable populations.
• Experience in completing casework/ programming services (example: behaviour management planning, community corrections programs).
• Expertise with computer programs such as ORCA, JOIN, Microsoft Office, Adobe, Outlook, as well as familiarity with court documents.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

(1) PROBATION OFFICER ROLE IN A COMMUNITY OFFICE:

Under the direction of a Senior Probation Officer and Manager, you will be responsible for delivering a broad range of community corrections programs and services to adult and young offenders. You will ensure compliance of offenders with supervision orders issued by the Courts and engage with community stakeholders. Working through the effective framework of case management, you will use your skills to appropriately assess, formulate case plans, and apply Effective Practices in Community Supervision to support client behavior change.
Using your advanced interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal), you will conduct investigations, prepare reports, and attend court as required. In the community, you will conduct field visits and liaise with local Police, Courts, and Correctional Centers as required. You will build and maintain positive relationships with community counselling and programming resources, working with systematic barriers that affect individuals and community, and will promote a positive image of probation in the community. Superior time management and prioritization skills are imperative to effectively complete case management activities.

(2) PROBATION OFFICER ROLE IN THE MOBILE MONITORING UNIT (MMU):

Under the direction of a Senior Probation Officer and Manager of the Edmonton Adult Attendance Centre, you will be responsible for delivering remote supervision to pre-trial and low risk sentenced offenders. Using your advanced organizational and time management skills, you will utilize RePath technology to supervise and provide direction to a large number of clients across the province.
Probation Officers - MMU conduct investigations, prepare reports, attend Court, facilitate and complete all elements of effective case management while supervising clients within applicable federal and provincial legislation, divisional policies and procedures, and relevant operational manuals to maintain correctional and rehabilitative programs.
Note: These positions are classified as Correctional Service Worker 1 and are not eligible for growth evolution to Correctional Service Worker 2.

(3) PROBATION OFFICER ROLE IN THE CENTRAL MONITORING UNIT (CMU):

Under the direction of an Electronic Monitoring Supervisor and Manager of the Central Monitoring Unit, you will be responsible for monitoring clients who are Court-mandated to ankle bracelet electronic monitoring. This position will follow shift work (including days, evenings and night shifts) to cover the 24/7 operations of the Central Monitoring Unit.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES CONT.

Primary functions of the Probation Officer role within CMU will include administrative and case work tasks and responsibilities, as well as onboarding and policy adherent supervision of those clients with electronic monitoring conditions. You will be responsible for the management of the electronic monitoring technology, including creating offender/client profiles and supervision parameters, administering electronic monitoring Court-ordered conditions and facilitating a timely response to non-compliance. Additionally, you be responsible for case file monitoring of clients on the electronic monitoring program, which includes interpreting and responding to data from the electronic monitoring solution and client case files, any issues in a timely manner, including case management activities related to Electronic Monitoring conditions. You will assess files and will refer to a Probation Officer (CSW I/II) for casework beyond the scope of the Central Monitoring Unit.

• Thorough knowledge of applicable legislation, as well as the ability to follow and apply policy
• Knowledge and ability in working with socially marginalized individuals and victims of trauma or intergenerational abuse as well as working with a trauma informed approach
• A self-starter mindset with the ability to work with little guidance
• Personal resiliency and decision making skills
• Own transportation to travel into the community to collaborate with community stakeholders
• Adaptability to changing priorities and information

(4) PROBATION OFFICER ROLE AT YOUTH ATTENDANCE CENTRE (YAC):

The Youth Attendance Centre (YAC) operates with a three-team rotational structure, with each team consisting of one Probation Officer and one Correctional Peace Officer. YAC Probation Officers work collaboratively to support youth in fulfilling their legal obligations and promote their rehabilitation through structured programs, curfew compliance checks, and community engagement.
Being a Probation Officer at the YAC requires a strong commitment to community safety, youth development, and teamwork. You will collaborate with your Correctional Peace Officer partner to ensure compliance, provide rehabilitative support, and guide youth toward positive life changes.
This position operates on a rotational schedule, requiring flexibility to work various shifts within YAC’s operational hours (7:45 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week).
