  • This position provides the option to work from home on Mondays and Fridays each week, with the requirement to report to the primary NOVA Chemicals work location on Tuesdays through Thursdays. Employees can opt out of the hybrid schedule and will be expected to work Monday-Friday from the primary work location.

NOVA Chemicals, headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, is wholly-owned by Mubadala Investment Company of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
We are seeking a Process Safety Engineer to join the Process Safety & Process Technology team located at our Joffre Site in Central Alberta, near Red Deer. Reporting to the Process Safety & Process Technology Team Leader, you will provide loss prevention and risk management support to the units, site, projects and corporate initiatives focused on the achievement of safe and reliable operations. You will work collectively and collaboratively with multidiscipline teams, including Operations, Maintenance and Engineering.

You Will Use Your Expertise To:

  • Facilitate hazard analysis and training
  • Manage and facilitate 5-year Risk Assessments
  • Facilitate, conduct and coach others on the use of risk analysis techniques
  • Serve as a focal point for internal and external Process Safety audits and assurance programs
  • Function as a resource to technical staff in support of the application of NOVA Chemicals’ Loss Prevention Standards, Process Safety procedures and Responsible Care® Standard
  • Provide leadership in setting direction and implementing various Process Safety Management policies, metrics and management systems (ex. management of change)
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness related to catastrophic threats facing NOVA Chemicals’ facilities
  • Provide technical expertise for Process Safety ad-hoc studies and region wide initiatives
  • Champion a culture of Process Safety excellence

What We Are Looking For:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Applied Science or equivalent, with 8+ years of related process safety and/or engineering experience
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA or an equivalent Canadian engineering governing body with the ability to become registered with APEGA is required
  • Process Safety engineering experience in Olefins/Polyethylene would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of Engineering Standards, Responsible Care® Standards, 5-year Process Hazard Assessment programs and Process Safety Life-cycle Management experience would be considered an asset
  • Familiarity with Process Safety industry groups such as the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) and knowledge of the work of the Chemical Safety Board (CSB)
  • General understanding of industry standards and practices related to Process Safety and applicable Process Safety regulations
  • Strong computer skills, especially in data analysis and modeling
  • Understanding of incident investigation processes
  • Demonstrated willingness to take initiative and be a self-directed worker
  • Demonstrated decision making and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work within multidiscipline teams and manage multiple priorities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
