JOB DESCRIPTION

We invite you to bring your skills within Safety Engineering and Quantitative Risk Assessments (QRA) and Fire- and Explosions Risk Assessments (FERA) into play as you contribute to safe and innovative design solutions in the forefront of the Green Energy transition. To succeed in this role you must have solid technical background within Process Safety Engineering and execution of QRAs/FERAs from the Energy sector.
You will join our Energy Transition Department
As our new Principal Process Safety Engineer you will be part of a strong team of 30+ staff consisting of multidiscipline engineers and project managers in UK. You will also be part of the global process safety team consisting of 30+ Safety Engineers. You will be working close together with colleagues in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, UK, Germany and India. The team is a good mix of younger and more experienced colleagues. We are involved in interesting, challenging and varied projects to deliver in the near future within the Green Energy transition, including the transition to greener fuels such as hydrogen, methanol and ammonia and electrification of industrial heat.
The focus areas for this role are onshore facilities within Power-to-X technologies and industrial decarbonisation. The projects are mostly situated in northern Europe, but also in other parts of the world. Through design, engineering and consultancy services, we cover all safety aspects of the projects in different phases including concept and feasibility studies, detailed engineering, owners engineering and permitting.
Our core competences are: HSE management/risk management during the engineering stages of projects and permitting stages with risk identification (HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA and Design Reviews, dialogue with authorities), risk assessment (QRA/FERA) and risk reduction (ALARP).

Responsibilities:

YOUR KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE;

  • Leading and coordinating the required risk and safety studies to be performed in order to apply for permitting for the project in the relevant locations, eg UK
  • Preparing safety documentation during engineering of projects (process/technical safety)
  • Leading safety workshops on projects (including HAZID, HAZOP and LOPA workshops)
  • Evaluating risk and risk reducing measures according to the ALARP principle on projects
  • Performing, leading, and coordinating work for quantitative risk assessments (QRA) and fire- and explosions risk assessments (FERA) using QRA software (PHAST/SAFETI or TNO effects)
  • Building capabilities and guidelines, tools and templates for dispersion modelling and fire/explosion modelling using commercial CFD-software (FLACS/InFlux) in context of quantitative risk assessments (QRA) and fire- and explosions risk assessments (FERA)
  • Providing process engineering support to Power-to-X and industrial decarbonisation projects.
  • Providing project management support to small scale consultancy projects.

From the moment you join Ramboll, we will support your personal and professional development so that you grow with the company. For this role, we believe your starting point is:

  • Engineering degree in Process/Chemical engineering .
  • Relevant experience as Process or Process Safety Engineer from Energy sector
  • Knowledge of legislation framework for major accident hazards (e.g. Seveso-directive and COMAH-directive)
  • Experience in context of dialogue with Authorities (e.g. HSE in UK, DSB in Norway and equivalent)
  • Experience with safety documentation during engineering of projects (e.g. safety philosophies, HAZID and HAZOP)
  • Experience with performing, leading and coordinating work for quantitative risk assessments (QRA) and fire- and explosions risk assessments (FERA)
  • Experience with relevant QRA software (e.g. DNV PHAST/SAFETI, Shell FRED, or Gexcon Effects/Risk Curves)
  • Have a good understanding of the heat transfer, fluid mechanics and general process design
  • Have a good understanding of mathematical modelling of physical phenomena (e.g. fire and explosion scenarios) and frequency modelling (e.g. event-tree analysis)
  • Excellent English skill

Personal qualities that will help you succeed in this role include: detail-oriented, self-driven, pro-active and result-oriented. You want to create innovative solutions and are an analytical talent who knows that the devil is in the details.

  • You like challenges and thrive in developing and creating added value to the work that you do and want to contribute to setting the standard for safety within design solutions in the forefront of the Green Energy transition. With this mindset, you take on safety related tasks, challenges and responsibilities in projects and you can work within different areas, from onshore facilities.
  • You are an excellent team worker with good communication skills as you will be working together with clients and colleagues
