ABOUT US

MailOnline is one of the world’s largest digital news platforms, reaching millions of users every day across desktop, mobile, and app platforms. We are embarking on a complete website redesign, focusing on creating a user-first experience optimised for mobile, multimedia content, and fast performance.
To achieve this, we are looking for an experienced Lead UX/UI Designer to join our team and report to the Director of Product Design. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of how our users interact with MailOnline by leading the design strategy, user experience (UX) research, and user interface (UI) development.

KEY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • 5+ years of experience in UX/UI design, with a strong portfolio demonstrating a track record of leading complex, multi-device projects.
  • Experience in leading redesign projects for large-scale websites or applications, particularly those with a high content volume.
  • Expertise in user research methodologies (e.g., interviews, surveys, usability testing, persona development) and proven ability to apply findings to improve user experiences.
  • Proficiency in wireframing and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, Axure).
  • Strong understanding of user journey mapping, interaction design, and user flow analysis.
  • Experience with responsive and mobile-first design principles.
  • Ability to work with developers to ensure seamless integration of design systems and technical requirements.
  • Familiarity with SEO, analytics, and data-driven design approaches.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills—clearly articulating design concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of design systems and component-based UI design for scalability and consistency.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working on news, media, or content-heavy platforms.
  • Familiarity with performance optimisation, accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG 2.1), and best mobile and web design practices.
  • Understanding of multimedia integration, including video and UGC content handling in UX design.
  • Previous experience with A/B testing and using analytics to guide design decisions.
This role is perfect for someone passionate about user experience, data-driven design, and delivering impactful, user-friendly products at scale. We’d love to hear from you if you’re ready to undertake a challenging and exciting project!

Responsibilities:

ROLE OVERVIEW

As the Lead UX/UI Designer, you will oversee the design process for the complete redesign of the MailOnline website. You will focus on building a seamless user experience across desktop, mobile, and app platforms. In this role, you will conduct user research, design user journeys, and create intuitive, engaging, and visually appealing user interfaces.
Working closely with product managers, developers, editorial teams, and other stakeholders, you will lead the design discovery process and ensure that the new platform meets user needs and business goals.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead Design Strategy: Own and drive the design vision and strategy for MailOnline’s website redesign, ensuring a cohesive user experience across all devices (desktop, mobile, tablet, and app).
  • User Journey Analysis: Analyse and map out the end-to-end user journey across all touchpoints (including desktop, mobile, and apps), identifying pain points and opportunities for improvement.
  • User Research & Testing:

    • Conduct in-depth user research, interviews, and usability testing to gather insights on user behaviours, needs, and preferences.

    • Develop detailed user personas and scenarios based on research findings to guide design decisions.
    • Organise and run A/B tests and iterate on designs based on feedback and data insights.
    • UX Design & Wireframing:

      • Translate business goals and user insights into wireframes, prototypes, and design concepts.

      • Create detailed user flows, site maps, and interaction models to inform stakeholders and development teams.
      • Ensure design choices are optimised for performance, accessibility, and mobile-first experiences.
      • UI Development:

        • Lead the creation of a modern, visually engaging user interface for MailOnline, considering brand consistency and best practices.

        • Develop UI component libraries and design systems that ensure consistency across various platforms and devices.
        • Collaborate with developers to ensure accurate translation of design into code.
        • Cross-functional Collaboration:

          • Work closely with the product management, engineering, editorial, and marketing teams to ensure the design aligns with project timelines, business objectives, and technical requirements.

          • Engage with the SEO, data, and social teams to ensure designs optimise performance, engagement, and content distribution.
          • Stakeholder Management:

            • Present design concepts and solutions to senior leadership and key stakeholders, incorporating their feedback into final designs.

            • Manage feedback loops between stakeholders, users, and development teams to ensure alignment on design direction.
            • Monitoring & Iteration:

              • Monitor the performance of new designs post-launch, using analytics and user feedback to make continuous improvements.

              • Ensure the design remains scalable and adaptable to future business or user needs.
