The Crops and Irrigation Branch of the Ministry of Agriculture requires a highly motivated individual to join their team for a two-year Intern Position. As the Production Technology Intern, you will support and lead the development and delivery of programs and services of the Ministry, including the Crop Pest Surveillance Program for crops in Saskatchewan. You will also participate in developing educational and technology transfer materials and programs for producers, producer groups, pest control officers, agronomists, and Ministry staff.
To qualify for this position, you must:
- Within the last three years, have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree in Agriculture or a degree in a related field. Fall 2024 graduates with field and/or diagnostic experience may be considered.
- Be registered or need to become registered with the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists as defined by The Agrologists Act.
- Hold a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
This position leads the execution and coordination of insect and plant disease surveys conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture. This includes the development of survey protocols, coordinating the ministry’s pest survey proposal process, training and coordination of surveyors, working on special projects and communication with Rural Municipalities and regional Plant Health Technical Advisors. The Intern will also participate in surveys and work alone in rural areas of the province, under variable climate conditions. You must be willing to travel on gravel roads and work flexible hours. Additionally, you will verify and validate pest survey data entry, and effectively provide written and verbal communication of survey results.
The successful candidate will have knowledge of prairie agriculture crop production systems; agricultural pests such as plant diseases, insects and weeds, including terminologies, applied methodologies and identification procedures; and crop pest survey and survey methodology.
