Description:

TITLE AND SALARY WILL BE DETERMINED BASED UPON EDUCATION AND NURSING EXPERIENCE.

Overview: The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse who sets and upholds care standards and is accountable for nursing care. This role involves managing patient care activities, using independent judgment, and collaborating with the care team. Responsibilities include leadership, partnership, and supervision, as well as establishing relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve desired outcomes. The role also includes a commitment to the community and the nursing profession.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and maintains productive relationships by demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment to patients and colleagues.
  • Understands cultural differences and holds peers accountable for healthy relationships.
  • Balances work and personal life, models safe work hours, time management, and a healthy lifestyle. Communicates safety hazards to peers and management.
  • Applies adult learning principles in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff. Provides detailed teaching to guide patients and families through care transitions.
  • Supports the development of students and new staff and may serve as a preceptor.
  • Fosters open dialogue, seeks feedback, and improves practice. Uses the nursing process within Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment.
  • Formulates holistic care plans involving patients as partners and considers their individual needs.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying various patient issues and communicates effectively with care providers.
  • Provides comprehensive documentation to promote caregiver communication. Incorporates organizational goals to enhance patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.
  • Builds compassionate relationships with patients, families, and colleagues. Takes responsibility for professional development to enhance practice and patient care quality.
  • Actively participates in shared governance, goal setting, and supports quality improvement initiatives. Engages as a full partner on the care team and adapts flexibly to change.
  • Participates in quality improvement efforts and identifies opportunities for improvement. Uses research and evidence-based practice to support clinical care and patient satisfaction.
  • One year of prior nursing experience preferred. BSN preferred.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge and skills for age-appropriate patient care and understanding of growth and development principles.
  • Ability to assess patient data and meet age-specific needs according to department policies.
  • Must establish positive relationships with all staff and patients.
  • Ability to work effectively in a complex environment, handle priorities, and use specialized equipment.
  • Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and leadership in the nursing process required.
  • Requires physical stamina, mobility, and manual dexterity.
  • UPMC offers flexible work options with premium pay; 6 months of nursing experience required for specialized programs.LICENSURE, CERTIFICATIONS, AND CLEARANCES:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within one year of hire/transfer.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
  • UPMC approved national certification preferred.
  • Graduate nurses must complete licensure examination within six months of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first. Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examination within 6 months of their start date or they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.
  • Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
