Hiring Unit:
Department of Physics (Professor Thomas Brunner)
Position Summary:
Working under the direction of the two Chairs of the Physics Outreach Committee as well as the McGill Space Institute Coordinator, the four positions will perform functions directly relevant to the management and organization of the activities of four key programs of the Physics Outreach Committee and the McGill Space Institute AstroMcGill outreach effort. The four programs are as follows:
AstroMcGill:
Focus on interdisciplinary outreach under the broad umbrella of the McGill Space Institute.
- Seek out high profile speakers from the scientific community, and establish a schedule of monthly lecture.
- Organize outreach volunteers to coordinate with the public prior to, during and after each lecture.
- Conducting regular surveys regarding the lecture series in order to continuously update and improve the lectures to make them relevant to and of interest to the public
High-School Outreach:
This Program aims to foster an interest in physics and astrophysics among high school and/or CEGEP students.
- Will design and organize activities such as lab tours, demonstrations, inquiry-based experiments for student coming to visit McGill and/or by collaborating with local educational institutions.
Science in Space:
Collaboration with Dell’s Girls Who Game program introduces female students (grades 5-6) in disadvantaged schools to astrophysics by building a telescope in the computer environment of MineCraft.
- Help to develop materials, and work directly with teachers and students in Montreal area schools.
McGill Physics Hackathon:
This is an annual event in which students from all over the world come to Montreal and participate in a 48-hour computational hackathon. Student teams compete to develop solutions to inquiry based using numerous resources provided for them.
- Coordinate the organization of the hackathon, which includes scheduling, venue selection, catering, sponsorship, advertising and social media presence, award provision, judging provision and general coordination of event volunteers that are needed to run the event.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
- Teaching and Mentoring experience
- Experience working the public
- Experience working with students from the primary to CEGEP levels.
Experience and education:
- BSc or higher degree in Physics
Location: This position is located in Montreal, Quebec and the work for this position is expected to be performed in Quebec.
